Reporting to the Director, Airside Ground Operations, this role is responsible to ensure a safe and efficient airfield and apron for Toronto Pearson airside users, enhancing asset use while maintaining a safe operation and ensuring customer needs are met. This role will be responsible for the engagement and leadership of a highly unionized workforce and service contracts operating 24/7/365 days a year and charged with fostering an environment of trust and proactivity focused on continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities:
Deliver the “day of “Airfield Operation
Accountable for the Day-to-Day service delivery, stakeholder relationship management and service level standards of Airfield Operations, which include:
FOD Control and Response
Surface maintenance airside and groundside
Snow Removal (Runways, Taxiways and in-house apron resources)
Turf maintenance
Runway Inspections and Surface Condition Reporting
Paint Program
Training department
Identify shortfalls in work tasks based on team and collaborator inputs. Achieve consensus with Contract and Logistics team to achieve day-of requirements
SMS/SeMS reporting and investigation
Deliver a safe and efficient winter/seasonal operation
Oversee and manage maneuvering area snow removal and maintenance services in accordance with regulations and operational plans
Ensure that equipment-specific training and competency-based technical training is current to enable airfield employees to perform at a high level and forecasting requirements
Ensure that all day-of airside activities are coordinated and communicated to the GTAA and community to minimize impact to airfield operations
Review each event for operational improvements and on a seasonal basis to identify opportunities for the subsequent season
Support and lead as applicable community engagement on winter operations and associated preparations
People Management
Develop and deliver engagement programs to create a world class working environment for the airfield team
Influence and lead by clearly defining what expectations and success looks like to develop a positive, balanced and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
Lead through example, our guiding principles to support and further the business’ vision through building and development of diverse, multi-skilled teams
Financial and Contract Management
Oversight of service contracts to support day-of operational team including specification preparation, tender evaluation to implementation.
Develop processes and procedures to ensure staffing is appropriately and efficiently deployed to deliver agreed capacity whilst maintaining financial discipline
Develop and manage the department budget, including monitoring expenses monthly for accuracy and appropriateness, and taking corrective action promptly when required
Qualifications:
Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with all required doses of a vaccine approved by Health Canada. The GTAA will provide reasonable accommodation to individuals who cannot be vaccinated due to disability or any other ground protected by the Canadian Human Rights Act.
Post-Secondary degree or diploma and/or equivalent education and work experience. Post-Secondary education in Aviation Management; Business Management; or Logistics would be an asset
5+ years of aviation management experience
5+ years of people management or leadership experience; building highly skilled, motivated and successful teams
Track record of accomplishment in delivering airfield operations and safety best practices
Experience leading winter airside operations
Ability to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance and a D/A AVOP
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to influence, collaborate and negotiate cross-functionally in a unionized environment, as well as with external partners to achieve results
Excellent people leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
Contract management, airfield operations knowledge and basic knowledge of work programming/planning
Strong decision-making skills and demonstrates a sense of urgency to deliver operational excellence
Solid business understanding and improvement mindset to solution immediate issues and to identify trends, provide recommendations, plans and implement corrective actions
Ability to successfully manage under pressure and respond to critical and or changing priorities throughout the day
An ability to anticipate and support the “Day of” operational team as required ensuring Toronto Pearson has a successful day and identification of Key Performance Indicators to support what success looks like
Ability to lead an airport operation in winter conditions involving snow and ice removal
