Post-Secondary Coordinator/Academic Advisor

Department: Employment & Training – Located at KVI

Overview: Increase student success by helping them to make informed decisions about their educational goals this is responsible for administering the delivery of Post-Secondary services as well as providing academic advising, including all financial-related duties, participation in education-related events, reporting and performing various administration functions

Duties

• Manage the Post Secondary Program:
• Establish and maintain contact with high schools and post-secondary institutions; Participate in relevant conferences, workshops and committees for post secondary education.
• Management of critical timelines for funding requirements, application of deadlines for funding requirements.
• Complete all administrative duties for the Post Secondary Program and Academic Advising.
• Teaches post-secondary students about the content and structure of post-secondary and/or trades programs including graduation and/or transfer requirements for a particular program of study.
• Supports and encourages confidence in academic decision-making by promoting student independence in academic processes and regulations.
• Distributes certificates, diploma, and university transfer program information to all learners and other appropriate internal and external contacts. This information may be presented in individual or group sessions.
• Interprets testing results relevant to placement decisions.
• Assists students in the development of an educational plan including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals, to guide the student through this decision-making process.
• Educates new and continuing students in identified programs about course planning and registration processes.
• Assists students in the preparation of their academic sponsorship applications.
• Research, develop and recommend resources to assist students in their programs:
• Consults with students to audit progress through programs
• Provides students with information about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major and/or transfer institution).
• Assists students in the monitoring and evaluation of their educational progress.
• Refers students to available resources to meet individual needs.
• Advocacy and promotion for students:
• Advocate for students as appropriate.
• Meet with students, parents, counsellors, teachers, and other school staff as necessary.
• Liaise with area school staff and Haisla students to provide information about available options.
• Participates in on and off reserve events promoting post-secondary education.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Business Technology with 3 – 5 years related experience preferred;
• Experience with the post secondary education system, public and independent school systems;
• Organizational and office management skills;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
• Ability to work in a busy environment and maintain confidentiality;
• Possess a valid BC Drivers license and own vehicle is an asset;
• Must be willing and able to pass a criminal record check;
• Direct experience working with First Nations.
