At this time, the Halifax Port Authority (“HPA”) requires a
Working Shop Foreman, Rigging – Acting
The role reports to the Manager, Maintenance & Property Services. The Working Shop Foreman supervises one rigger, and helpers as required.
Under general supervision instructs, supervises subordinates in the performance of their duties; responsible for and carries out all rigging and other activities undertaken by the Rigger Shop; maintains equipment and supplies; follows safety regulations; performs other related duties.
The successful candidate must have successfully completed of Grade 12 and must be Certified Rigger with a minimum experience of five (5) years in rigging preferably in construction or industrial work. The successful candidate must be certified in Master Limited 60 ton, 40 passenger vessels with MED A1 and A2 certification, 10 ton hydraulic crane operations and must be able to work at high elevations on HPA facilities. Previous experience with rigging practices and equipment, such as rope, blocks, and tackles is required and they must possess a valid class 5 motor vehicle license, possess a clean Driver’s Abstract and be insurable. The successful candidates will have a general knowledge of environmental regulations as they apply to the duties of the position.
Specific Accountabilities
Supervision and Direction
Directs personnel and assigns work to be carried out as per work orders or as required.
Ensures work schedules are carried out according to set priorities.
Supervises and inspects all jobs and ensures job completion meets standards or requirements.
Instructs and ensures subordinates follow job procedures.
Ensures all aspects of rigging are properly carried out.
Ensures all subordinates are properly trained to carry out assigned duties.
Rigging
Performs the duties of a rigger as required for various operations, work projects or maintenance work lifting, moving, slinging, fastening, and all lifting devices.
Carries out Fender Construction and Maintenance as required and ensures that fenders at piers are in good operating condition.
Maintains rubber-tire protection on all piers by replacing, repairing or removing tires.
Safety
Complies with HPA’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy (HR-354-4) and all Occupational Health and Safety regulations as outlined by the Canada Labour Code. Demonstrates a commitment to promoting a safety culture while ensuring all safety procedures, policies, and best practices are followed.
Follows safety procedures/measures while performing duties.
Wears protective clothing and equipment while performing duties, as required, and ensures that employees under their supervision do so as well.
Instructs subordinates on safety procedures when maintaining, moving or constructing fenders, operating equipment, carrying out rigging operations or performing other duties carried out by the rigging shop.
Performs traffic control duties.
Ensures all accidents are recorded and reported to their supervisor.
Environmental Management System
Responsible for complying with HPA’s Environmental Policy and demonstrating knowledge of and adherence to the EMS.
Assists and ensures involvement in the development and maintenance of applicable procedures.
Communicate any relevant information on the environment aspect and identify non-conformities to their supervisor or the EMS Coordinator.
Follow and comply with all relevant EMS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Other Duties
Controls access to Shop by others, enforces all regulations pertaining to the Shop and ensures it is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
Assists with operation and maintenance of work boat and Operations boat.
Carries out removal of debris and other objects from harbour waters and records such activities.
Inspects or assists in inspections of marine equipment and assets.
Responsible for recording time and maintaining time sheets for subordinates.
Keeps daily log of work activities.
Operates heavy equipment as required.
Assists in other shops as required.
Performs snow removal operations.
