The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Hematology/Oncology service of McMaster Children’s Hospital will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP will support the clinical activity of the Hematology/Oncology service and the associated patient care and interventions through the Hematology/Oncology service. This would include the inpatient Hematolology/Oncology ward and outpatient oncology clinics of the pediatric Hematology/Oncology department encompassing care for children and their families on active treatment, off therapy surveillance and survivorship care. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible for: providing direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams. The NP will work in partnership with Hematology/Oncology, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education. The NP reports to the Director, Critical Care and Ambulatory Services, McMaster Children’s Hospital, and the Chief of Nursing Practice
- Current Certificate of Registration in the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse Extended Class RN(EC)
- Completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing, with an Advances Practice Nurse Certificate in Pediatrics, (NP Pediatrics) or Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP)
- Minimum of 3 years acute/primary clinical experience in pediatrics
- Minimum of 4-6 years nursing experience preferred
- Proficiency in performing history and examination of the infant, toddler, child and adolescent
- Knowledge and assessment of developmental milestones at all stages of pediatric development and ability to access appropriate community or hospital-based resources in complex care setting
- Ability to triage and independently manage hematology/oncology patients appropriately in the short-term in a busy clinic
- Experience and knowledge to recognize emergent hematology/oncology calls and distinguish urgent from semi-urgent and nonurgent hematology/oncology matters and conditions
- Ability to counsel and educate parents and children in the hematology/oncology
- Knowledge of community resources required for hematology/oncology patients
- Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children
- Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives
- Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, organization and prioritization
- Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
- Knowledge and experience in change theory and pediatric learning principles
- Demonstrated ability to utilize information technology
- Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other professional organizations relevant to the role

Unit Summary
The McMaster University Medical Centre site of the Hamilton Health Sciences is home to McMaster Children’s Hospital. The Critical Care and Ambulatory Program consists of the Pediatric Intensive Care Units, the Pediatric Emergency Department and the Pediatric Ambulatory Clinics.
As part of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Hematology Program, the pediatric oncology inpatient and outpatient clinics provide coordinated, comprehensive care to patients from infancy through 18 years of age. The oncology ward and clinics provide cancer care inter-professional approach with expertise in pediatric disease management within a family-centered environment.
