Hamilton Health Sciences Looking for Physician Assistant at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Full Time

The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Pediatric Otolaryngologists. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, utilizing the principles of evidence based practice. The Physician Assistant will work in partnership with Pediatric Otolaryngologists, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education. This role will support the clinical activity of Pediatric Otolaryngologists, the associated patient care and interventions of the Pediatric ENT service. This includes the Pediatric ENT Clinic, Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Inpatient Units, and Operating. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services, requesting consultation with appropriate physicians, clinicians, or other health care resources as indicated. The Physician Assistant will order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. The Physician Assistant will participate in the education of other health professional trainees as appropriate, as well as research and academic pursuits as directed by the identified Physician Supervisor.

• Graduate of Physician Assistant Program
• Prior experience in the Pediatric Otolaryngology and/or Pediatric Acute Care settings an asset
• Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in applying advanced Otolaryngology knowledge, physical assessment skills, diagnostic interventions and self-care or caregiver-lead management skills for pediatric patients in an ambulatory setting
• Proficiency in performing history and examination of the infant, toddler, child and adolescent
• Knowledge and assessment of developmental milestones at all stages of pediatric development including the unique aspects of adolescent development
• Experience and ability to lead and facilitate the development and implementation of basic and advanced education programs for patients, families, staff, other health professionals
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions in times of emergencies
• Demonstrated ability to work alongside Intensivists, Nurses and other Health Care Professionals
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to promote professional development
• Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
• Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care
• Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
• Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children

Unit Summary

The McMaster University Medical Centre site of the Hamilton Health Sciences is home to McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH), which provides care to children aged 0-18 years. Pediatric Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat) at MCH includes consultative, operative and follow-up services for infants, children and adolescent patients. The patient population consists of large volume outpatient as well as inpatient surgical and non-surgical care of patients suffering from congenital and acquired disorders of the Ear, Nose and Throat. The MCH Otolaryngology team utilizes a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach to patient care.

The MCH pediatric otolaryngologists specialize in the care of pediatric patients with diverse congenital, developmental and acquired disorders of the head and neck. In addition to assessing and treating children with recurrent ear infections, hearing loss and sleep apnea the physicians also manage children with more complex conditions of the airway, sinuses and ear. Benign and malignant neck masses are also treated by our team as well as critical airway support to our neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. The group has extensive collaboration with other surgical disciplines including pediatric neurosurgery and plastic surgery as well as other health care providers including audiologists, speech language pathologists and respiratory therapists.

Monday to Sunday; days, evenings, weekends, nights, on-call (as required)
