Unit Summary
(PROTECT: The reducing Patient and caregiver Risk and imprOving health outcomes Through innovation, Excellence, and appliCation of digital health remote monitoring and virtual care Technologies).
The PROTECT Connected Health Program uses a novel proactive intervention approach consisting of virtual care (VC) with patient remote automated monitoring (RAM) to address the challenges faced by cancer patients at home whose cancer is advancing and who are at high risk for major oncologic complications, e.g., pain crisis, sepsis, dehydration, which, unmanaged, will precipitate unplanned visits to the emergency room (ER) and/or admissions to hospital. Such patients find themselves at the interface between cancer centre/hospital and being at home. Unfortunately, this is often a weak and brittle link in cancer care. The program has many year’s virtual care experience in the peri-operative domains. The program is now expanding into the oncology domain. Two areas have been identified in oncology to launch this program: CART cell therapy in patients with lymphoma, and patients having chemotherapy with advanced breast cancer.
Hamilton Health Sciences is a research-intensive work environment with a decades-long track record of making discoveries that change health care delivery. Within HHS and McMaster, PROTECT Connected Health is a leading, integrated research-operations virtual care program, developing innovative approaches to care, using state-of-the-art methods and virtual care technologies. This program is developed and delivered at the PROTECT Virtual care laboratory, located at the Juravinski Cancer Centre.
