The Possibility Engineering and Research Lab (PEARL) at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital focuses on conceptualizing, developing, and evaluating innovative technologies that create possibilities for young people with disabilities. These technologies allow them to participate more meaningfully in arts, music, physical activities, and therapies.

Our team works extensively in the development of mixed-reality video games that provide kids with motivating environments for exercise, learning and social play. In this role, you will support the development of existing and new products in our product portfolio, such as Bootle Pop, an early childhood music education mobile app and Bootle Blast (https://youtu.be/D1fQsJqt8JI) , our movement-tracking therapy game. Using the latest interactive gaming technologies and lots of creativity, you will push the current limits of technology to help create a world of possibility for all kids!

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will have the opportunity to:

• Develop a software framework to deliver educational content to users, which adapts to the user’s progression, interests and input
• Improve app usability by implementing UI/UX changes informed by user feedback
• Support the development of movement tracking games by implementing software change requests made by clinicians
• Explore best practises in implementing machine learning and signal processing algorithms by translating proof of concept code into production code
• Use Cloud APIs to extend functionality of our apps by supporting remote configuration and logging of data to the cloud
• Ensure quality of our software products by validating functionality and fixing any issues discovered
• Learn the current state of the art in interactive gaming technologies and accessibility
• Work with clinicians, game developers, music educators, engineers and researchers to assist you in your role

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• An undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science
• At least 1 year of experience writing software in C#
• Experience in some of the following technical areas: biomechanics, audio signal processing, machine learning, cloud technologies, database development, web development and/or media production
• Strong problem solving skills with a desire to learn
• Ability to work onsite and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in developing mobile games for Android and/or iOS
• Experience working in Unity
• Formal musical training or experience playing a musical instrument would be an asset
• Experience working with and/or designing for children of all abilities
