The Insurance Council of British Columbia is the regulatory organization that licenses and regulates the activities of over 45,000 life and general insurance agents, general insurance salespersons, insurance adjusters, and restricted travel insurance agents in British Columbia.
The Opportunity
Under the direct supervision of Council’s Manager, Finance, and the Director, Finance the Senior Accountant is responsible for the day to day accounting responsibilities, maintenance of the general ledger, review of month end reconciliations and financial analytics, preparation of the quarterly financial forecast, external audit coordination and preparation of reconciled schedules and documents and preparation and consolidation of annual budget, etc.

Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring extensive senior accounting experience and have worked with various accounting software. The incumbent must be highly accurate and efficient, have good oral and written communication skills, deadline driven along with excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Monthly/Quarterly and Annual reporting:
Review account reconciliations and financial analytics prepared by intermediate accountant. Provide guidance when appropriate.
Reconcile payroll (ADP vs. accounting system)
Prepare journal entries and reconcile investments (Manulife summary vs. accounting system)
Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial briefing note for FAC and Council meetings.
Work with department managers on quarterly forecasts
Ensures timely and accurate reporting to various Council reportorial requirements:
Annual report of WCB
Annual filing of Extended health tax (EHT)
Annual executive compensation report and salary survey
Annual council member remuneration report
Annual filing of SOFI (statement of financial information)
Assist the Manager, Finance and the Director, Finance in preparation of the following finance related tasks :
annual external audit (e.g. preparation of working papers, various reconciliations etc.)
annual budget (e.g. draft budget timeline, prepare budget templates, work with department mangers, consolidate department budgets etc.)
ad hoc internal audits of systems and procedures
develop and implement best-practice policies, procedures and internal controls for accounting operations, financial management and payroll functions.
creation of ad-hoc organizational policies to enhance the Council’s internal controls.
participates in regular debrief of accounting processes to improve efficiencies in the department.
Other responsibilities:
Work with payroll outsource company (ADP) to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll to staff.
Reconciliation of T4s and T4a’s at year end.
Other accounting/financial duties as assigned by the Manager, Finance and Director, .
Provides supervision/guidance to intermediate accountant and accounting assistant in their department duties and responsibilities.
Acts as a back-up for the Manager, Finance
Qualifications
University degree in Accounting
Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) in good standing
3 years of experience as senior accountant with experience in full cycle bookkeeping, journal entries preparation, monthly and annual reconciliation of asset accounts, financial statements preparation and analysis, payroll and benefits administration (which includes T4’s and T4a’s reconciliation).
Experience working with a management team
Experience managing junior staff
Extensive knowledge of accounting principles under Canadian GAAP, internal controls and procedures
Excellent working experience in various accounting software (e.g. Great Plains, ADP, or similar)
Intermediate to Advanced excel and database proficiency. Able to create pivot tables, macros, and strong knowledge of excel formulas
