Island Health Looking for Diabetes Nurse Educator at Nanaimo, BC Full Time

Job Description:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reports to Nurse Manager, Antepartum/Labour/Delivery/Antenatal Assessment. Provides clinical education for referred obstetrical in-patients and/or outpatients and their families/friends in theory and practice of the control of Gestational Diabetes and Diabetes Mellitus and in the use of technical instruments relating to diabetes care. Coordinates other professional resources helpful to the patient while in hospital and on discharge. Acts as a resource for physicians, other health care professionals and community groups concerned with the care of individuals with diabetes.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience

Successful graduation from a recognized School of Nursing plus successful completion of courses/workshops concerning obstetrical diabetes care. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.Three years recent related obstetrical nursing experience, including one year of recent experience in the control of gestational diabetes and diabetes mellitus in obstetrical patients.

Skills And Abilities

Ability to deal effectively with patients, families, physicians, hospital staff, and representatives of external agencies.

Demonstrated effective interpersonal, organizational and teaching skills.

Ability to operate equipment related to care of patients with diabetes.

Demonstrated ability to assess and respond to the emotional, social and psychological status of patients.

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
