Job Summary
Under the supervision of the School Principal, the Learning Assistance Teacher offers a balanced education program including mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical strength while empowering students to be responsible for their own success as Syilx. The LAT is responsible for supporting classroom teachers to meet provincial content and competencies in accordance with BC Ministry of Education curriculum. Included in this support is the ability to lead in the creation of Individual Education Plans and/or Smart Goals (learning, attendance, behavior) and develop resources which directly support the IEP and/or Smart Goals. The LAT will monitor a variety of on-going academic assessments and translate the resulting data to guide school decision making. Further, the LAT must promote a positive and safe learning environment and maintain regular communication with parents and community members. In addition, the LAT is responsible to work collaboratively with administration and all education staff, to identify individual and collective student needs, and develop/recommend appropriate intervention and/or enrichment programs to support the school, students, and their families.

Duties/Responsibilities
Job Responsibilities and Work Performed
Consult with internal/external community personnel and agencies
Ensure proper case management and documentation of student files
Work in collaboration with school staff and administration
Provide support strategies and advocate on behalf of students and parents regarding educational, social, emotional, and behavioral concerns
Develop IEPs and behavioral plans in collaboration with school-based team
Confer with education staff and administration to plan and schedule lessons and intervention/enrichment program to support student learning and development
Administer, monitor, and manage standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need
Develop treatment plans and set goals with students
Provide resources and referrals to students, education staff, and parents
Develop culturally appropriate programming that embraces Okanagan Syilx protocols, traditions, and practices
Ability to take lead role in grant-funded initiatives
Plan and provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 services as identified through the FNSA Special Education Program Workplan submission
Supervise and support professional development of Education Assistants
Demonstrate the educational use of technology and act as a resource to teachers to meet diverse needs in the classroom environment
Plan, develop, and deliver classroom resources including video, software, and self-directed courses that support in-class lessons and meet the Tier 2 and Tier 3 student needs
Attend and participate in FNSA Professional Learning Communities and professional development activities identified as relevant to the role of LAT.
Implement FNSA and PIB policies, programs and initiatives including recording and reporting service delivery as required
Attend staff meetings and serve on school committees as required
Regularly communicate with parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve student behavioral and academic issues
Coordinate and lead meetings with school staff and external agencies
Accountability
Maintain a positive image and provide quality learning support services to students to ensure positive, healthy relationships, boundaries, and professionalism
Maintain schedules, plan meetings, establish student files/records, and complete workplans and reports
Monitor student attendance, academic, and behavioral data to help identify and establish IEP learning goals and/or SMART goals
Conduct school LAT program assessment annually to review extent of program implementation and effectiveness
Share school LAT program data with relevant stakeholders
Decision Making
Level of decision making is high. Professional assessment and ongoing evaluation of student’s academic abilities and behavioral assessment is essential
High degree of trust and confidentiality required
Follows Code of Ethics for appropriate professional body related to Special Education Practices
Qualifications/Requirements
Minimum Academic/Educational Requirements
Master of Education in Special Education
Other Certification, Licenses, Designations and/or Training
Valid BC Teaching Certificate
Current Criminal Record Check including vulnerable persons
A track record of successfully working collaboratively in a First Nations school
Experience implementing current educational frameworks (e.g., UDL, RTI, DI) in classroom settings
Experience in the educational uses of classroom technologies and specialized (assistive) technologies specially to support students with diverse needs
Valid BC Driver’s license
Experience teaching ReadWell, Reading Mastery and JumpMath

2 years experience working in a school setting with First Nation population.

Understanding of best practices in special education with experience with students experience trauma-based behavioral blocks to learning
Excellent written and oral communication skills, advanced computer technology skills, and excellent organizational skills
Excellent organization skills to maintain learning assistance schedules, meetings, and student files
Ability to work with students Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8
Assets
Knowledge of Okanagan language and culture.
Knowledge of Penticton Indian Band Community issues
Must possess high physical and emotional energy to handle job stresses
Work from a holistic and culturally appropriate perspective/approach based on First Nations
Preference will be given to qualified Aboriginal applicants as per section 21 of the Human Rights Code.
