Summary:
As a key member of the school’s Student Services Team, the elementary school counsellor provides support services to elementary students experiencing behavioural, emotional, and social difficulties. The counsellor assesses and creates individual plans to strengthen self-esteem and to support successful relationships in the classroom and community. The elementary counsellor supports the implementation of school priorities and collaborates with the school board and the FNSA to ensure the educational and social emotional wellbeing of our students.
Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licences:
Master’s degree, recognized by the BC Teachers Regulatory Branch, in counselling psychology or a related discipline with a focus on behaviour intervention and counselling.
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Certification in clinical counselling, art therapy, expressive therapy, and/or play therapy is an asset.
BCTRB Membership is an asset.
Knowledge of the BC Ministry of Education current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures.
Experience with the IEP process and data collection for individual student goals.
Knowledge and understanding of the counselling role.
Experience working with behaviour intervention in children and adolescents.
Knowledge and experience in administration of suicide risk assessments and crisis intervention.
Experience working in a First Nations setting, and an understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture and history is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Commitment to working collaboratively in a team setting with students, staff, administration, parents, and community partners to provide the best possible services for students’ needs.
Provision of effective student, family, and group counselling services.
Collaboration with development and monitoring of Individual Education Plans.
Provision and facilitation of presentations on topics such as personal safety and conflict resolution.
Instruction in social skills programs to students with a wide range of abilities.
Response to critical incidents at the school.
Completion of other duties within the same scope and job level, as assigned.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)
