The Labour Market Information Council (LMIC) is a not-for-profit organization established to identify and implement pan-Canadian priorities to address the need for more consistent and accessible labour market information for Canadians.
Our efforts are driven by strong collaborations with our partners in federal, provincial and territorial governments, intermediary organizations (for example, career service providers) and academic researchers.

The position
LMIC is looking for a Junior Data Engineer to support the end-to-end development and maintenance of a cloud-based data warehouse built in a leading-edge infrastructure.
The Junior Data Engineer will also help create and apply metadata schemas. In addition, the successful candidate will troubleshoot pipeline issues, monitor data quality, and contribute to the improvement of a publicly exposed analytics API endpoint. They will also support the team’s projects as they relate to data sourcing, cleaning and ensuring data use is auditable.
The Junior Data Engineer will also be expected to help with the data analysis and research being conducted on an ongoing basis by the economics team. This includes cleaning and organizing a variety of data from different sources for one-off use and helping to extract salient insights and patterns in the data.
Work requirements
The successful candidate will be able to:
· Support the management of end-to-end data pipelines that gather, clean, sort, label and ingest data into the data repository, using a combination of off-the-shelf tools and pipeline-specific custom scripts.
· Manage the components and technologies used to support the data pipeline infrastructure.
· Understand the relative value of various datasets pertaining to labour markets and how various components can help fulfill end-user needs.
· Apply problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, organizational, design and interpersonal skills in the context of a multifaceted and fast-moving project.
· Create scalable metadata schemas to be applied to a wide variety of data.
· Work independently and establish priorities that meet organizational deadlines.
· Effectively collaborate with other economists to ensure alignment of deliverables, including reports, data visualizations and presentations.
· Act and react quickly to the changing organizational needs.
· Provide recommendations for improving research methods, research tools and information products to ensure the alignment of high-quality approaches.
Qualifications and knowledge domains
· A master’s degree in computer science, economics or other data-driven fields. Other combinations of education and work experience will be considered.
· Experience working with cloud computing systems (preferably GCP).
· Ability to drive transformation through the automation of existing processes, and testing and optimizing data quality.
· Strong programming skills, knowledge of algorithms and data structures.
· Knowledge of programming languages to analyze and transform data, such as Python and SQL.
· Good understanding of developer tools and techniques such as Git, GitHub/GitLab, CI, testing and Docker.
Assets
· Bilingualism in both official languages (French and English).
· Superior written and verbal communication skills.
· Experience developing cloud-based data repositories.
· Knowledge of dbt and Jinja templating.
· Experience with REST or GraphQL APIs.
Location

Compensation and benefits
The position provides a competitive package that aligns with the skills and competencies of the individual, and includes extended health coverage, flexible work/life policies, vacation, sick and personal leave, and RRSP benefits. The position entails a full-time employment opportunity under an 18-month contract with the possibility of renewal.
The starting salary range for this position is $68,000 – $78,000, commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
