Overview:
The Logistics Manager (On-Road) leads Lafarge Eastern Canada’s on-road transportation team, encompassing the customer-facing Customer Service Centre (CVC) and the administrative On-Road Freight Team. The Manager is responsible to maintain senior relationships with numerous contracted third-party carriers and accountable to ensure effective and efficient shipping of finished materials and, in some cases, inbound trucking of materials. Additionally the incumbent will have direct responsibility for the oversight of 3rd Party owned and operated cement terminals in Quebec contracted to Lafarge. This position will be the point of contact for truck-related topics, and will manage the carrier selection process to define service requirements, review bids and measure truck carrier performance against freight contracts to optimize truck assets and cost of delivery.
Critical for success in the role will be the ability to bring creativity and manage complexity to drive cost performance while maintaining service levels. As an expert for on-road logistics, the Logistics Manager (On-Road) ensures delivery of top-notch service for all Customer, Plant, and Terminal touch-points and interactions managed by the CVC and Freight teams. Focus must be on the utmost highest standards for safe, quality assured, environmentally-friendly, reliable and low-cost delivery of Lafarge’s products to both customer and intermediate storage locations as per the supply plan. Lastly, the Logistics Manager (On-Road) is accountable for the administration and resolution of carrier accounts as well as support to the other cement teams in resolving issues.
Responsibilities:
Safety:
Initiates, develops and maintains appropriate programs, priorities, and resources to manage health and safety risks for employees, customers, and vendors.
Actively leads implementation and compliance of Transport Canada and Lafarge Safety Standards.
Takes the lead on reporting/investigating any safety issues that involve local truck carriers.
Customer Focus:
Build and maintain relationships of trust with customers in assigned geography.
Drive and own customer satisfaction at all times.
Responsible for continuous improvement of customer service results.
This includes KPI development and tracking. Supervise a team tasked with providing consistent and reliable customer service from order placement through delivery and carrier payment.
Maintain an ordering and subsequent delivery service that is a positive, value-added experience for Lafarge’s customers.
Maintain an efficient order management process
Operational Excellence:
Actively selects opportunities to improve shipping schedule to minimize delivery times while providing oversight of transportation optimized by source, customer and margins to minimize cost of delivery.
Coordinate with Site Managers to assist in inventory management including a thorough understanding of related customer demand, daily coordination with onsite personnel, and consistent engagement of the inventory replenishment pipeline/plan for these locations.
Ensure the most productive use of asset through robust lane selection strategies are employed.
Carrier Management:
Maintain strong working relationships with carrier/external truck partners in order to support overall customer experience.
Function as primary point of contact with senior carrier management.
Lead tactical planning/asset management to match carrier fleet capacity with customer requirements in each market.
Leverage internal and vendor interactions to support service strategy, manage costs, and identify and incorporate opportunities for improvement.
Take leadership role in identifying and implementing changes to improve capacity utilization, improve service quality, and reduce costs.
Carrier Administration:
Through the Freight Team, analyze invoices, create purchase orders in SAP for all modes of transport (Road, Rail and Vessel), and ensure purchase order release process is accomplished timely and accurately in accordance with the Procure to Pay (P2P) process.
Communicate directly with Lafarge Canada Accounts Payable to dispute incorrect invoices directly with supply chain suppliers.
Review supply chain blanket order purchase order requirements, maintain purchase order tracking, create new purchase orders and update current purchase orders with new amounts.
Assures the timely and accurate entering and maintenance of all freight rates and accessorial charges and adjustments in SAP and regular audit, management and maintenance of carrier payables.
Oversees the Freight Team in the administration of SWAP/Wholesale/Import agreements, including PO’s, reconciliations, invoices, and Manual BOLS.
Terminal Oversight:
Oversee the management and performance of third party owned and operated terminals in Quebec, including management of the contracts, renegotiation and ensuring sites are following Lafarge requirements.
Continuous Improvement:
Supports the Cement group by working with both internal groups (sales, operations, manufacturing) and external groups (service providers, agencies, customers) representing truck shipping. Lead continuous improvement opportunities for current processes within the role to foster further simplification, visibility and efficiency.
This includes use of tools such as root cause analysis to identify constraints, developing solutions and implementation solutions.
Lead the review and implementation of new technology for integration of visibility and metric tracking for the logistics team and other stakeholders.
Integrate analysis of data to provide necessary business insights and make recommendations to improve the business and optimize our fleet.
Focus of carrier assessorial charges and develop strategies to reduce inefficiencies leading to them.
Procurement Strategy:
Leads, with procurement support, negotiations with carriers any any trucking-related RFP Process.
Provides insights on opportunities for both inbound and outbound truck movements.
Provides vendors’ a performance based scorecard measured on a consistent and ongoing basis.
Forecast & Budget:
Work with the cement and finance teams to develop monthly cost forecasts and monitoring tools.
Provide visibility and understanding to exceptions from the plan including active participation in monthly financial performance reviews.
Responsible for departmental budget development, monitoring, and analysis and explanation of variances.
Human Resources:
Function as the onsite leader for the on-road logistics team in Laval and perform direct supervisory responsibilities for the Customer Value Centre Supervisor and freight team members.
Initiate and participate in recruiting activities as required for the team, mentor and coach employees including participation in the performance review process.
Develop annual objectives for the team and train all new staff during the orientation and onboarding processes.
Foster and maintain a positive, open, team-oriented work environment.
This includes excellent communication and strong working relationships with internal stakeholders from Sales, Logistics, and Operations teams who support the same customer base.
Specific Accountabilities:
Freight-to-Customer and Freight-to-Terminal on-road truck freight execution and administration
Adherence to any allocation plans and ensuring close collaboration between sales and supply
Assures the timely and accurate entering and maintenance of all freight rates and accessorial charges and adjustments in SAP, and follow through of correct carrier payments.
Develops and implements continuous improvement processes and strategies for CVC and freight teams.
Travels as needed to meet with carriers, key customers and sales force to identify and incorporate service improvement opportunities.
Manage the RFP process by defining service requirements and reviewing bids in conjunction with bid process team
Manages budget, forecasts and other business cycle activities; Provides key performance reports.
Continues to improve the consistency of practices in ECAN to identify best practices, communicate and implement them
Relationship with Others
Interfaces intensely with Cement Sales, Manufacturing and Distribution organizations as well as the Product Line VP. Development of a strong relationship with the centralized back office team will also be critical for success in the role.

Qualifications:
Education and Work Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field from an accredited university is required.
Minimum of 7 years of management/supervisory experience
Experience in on-road logistics a strong asset
Prior field sales experience and/or experience in distribution
Customer service experience preferred
Experience using an ERP / SAP system preferred
Knowledge of building materials industry preferred
Bilingual English and French is an asset
Knowledge and Skills:
Strong written and verbal communication skills with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrated strong problem solving skills; a self-starter
Proven ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Strong time management skills essential
Ability to maintain composure in dealing with difficult situations; demonstrates positive customer service attitude
Flexible work schedule is required. This position may require the incumbent to work outside of normal working hours.
