IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY

Interim Controller

Reports To: Senior VP Finance

Duration: 3-4 Months

Location: Toronto (Hybrid-2 Days)

(Possibility to go Permanent)

Our client is looking for a dynamic individual to join them as Interim Controller. As a senior leader of the finance and accounting team, the Controller manages the operating effectiveness of treasury, financial reporting, A/P, A/R, and Deal Administration processes and controls, to support effective decision-making of the leadership and operations team.

This strategic interim assignment will call for the finance leader to lead and mentor a small team while conducting a full assessment of the finance function, develop a plan to modernize it, and conduct much of the work to implement changes. In addition to having a transformational skill set, the ideal candidate will have comfort rolling up their sleeves to help diagnose legacy issues related to their year-end reconciliations over the past few years to prepare for an upcoming audit.

Key Accountabilities:

• Oversee the corporate controllership function in delivering full-cycle accounting for all operating entities, including preparing financial statements.
• Manage, analyze, and approve all financial reporting materials and metrics for the corporate brokerages.
• Manage applicable tax filings and annual filings.
• Coordinate the business planning process for the annual budget, perform continuous analysis throughout the year, and manage subsequent forecasts as required.
• Communicate financial results and analysis to senior leadership.
• Manage the cash management relationship with the bank for corporate, brokerages, and incorporated agents.
• Maintain up-to-date access controls and signing authorities.
• Manage the corporate brokerage Deal Administration team working closely with its lead, to ensure accuracy and completeness of trades and payments to realtors, clients, and other brokers.
• In partnership with the lead of the Deal Administration team, manage the design, implementation, and documentation of preventative and detective manual and system controls as applicable.
• Assess and recommend opportunities for process and workflow efficiencies and maintain up-to-date knowledge of treasury, back office, and EDM system changes.
• Maintain up-to-date documentation of corporate brokerage policies as applicable to transaction services.
• Oversee the processing of pending trades and timely resolution of trade issues and act as a point of contact for escalated issues and see-through to resolution.
• Ensure completeness and accuracy of revenue and operating accounts by performing detailed reviews of I/S and B/S accounts, accruals, B/S reconciliations, and operating reports.
• Oversee the completion of recurring entries and month-end processes for all corporate brokerage entities.
• Oversee the accuracy and completeness of benefit reconciliations against the payroll register, ensuring timely processing of adjustments as required.
• Review payroll and issuance of applicable tax documents.
• Prepare payroll reporting, and provide analysis as required.
• Manage the transactional, financial, and award reporting.
• Oversee and continuously improve financial processes and the internal control environment.
• Liaise with internal and external auditors as needed for both corporate brokerage and incorporated agents.
• Collaborate with SVP Finance and business development team on M&A opportunities.
• Participate in the financial due diligence process for all acquisitions.
• Lead the onboarding of new assets.
• Oversee the accounting and reconciliation process as well as the preparation of Financial Statements and disclosures.
• Oversee the preparation of bi-annual Financial Statements and disclosures.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Professional accounting designation (CPA.CA, CPA.CMA or CP.CGA).
• Minimum 15 years of progressive accounting and finance experience with a background in IFRS/ASPE GAAP, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial analysis.
• High proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Sheets platform.
• A bachelor’s degree in commerce, Accounting, or Finance is an asset.
• Self-motivated, proactive, effective at prioritizing deliverables, and proven workload management skills.
• High attention to detail and proven ability to critically self-review deliverables to ensure completeness and accuracy.
• Proven ability to stay calm, professional, and organized in a fast-paced environment.
• Proven analytical capability to identify issues and comprehend concepts of high financial and accounting complexity, and able to analyze and propose solutions.
• Effective written & oral communicator, and able to tailor communication to stakeholders.
