As the engineering manager, you will be responsible for the development and direction of our operational applications that serve thousands of our people and millions of client’s users.
This role involves working at every stage of the software development life cycle to ensure that the solutions being designed and developed are capable of moving LifeWorks forward to an enterprise ready application that securely scales.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you’ll ensure that everything developed provides value back to the business; that the right priorities are focused on by balancing innovation and risk and you will enable the team to make informed decisions through clear communication, measurement and transparency.
This position is fully remote, but you can choose to work out of one of our hubs in Toronto/Markham, Montreal, or Atlanta.
What we’re looking for:
A proven leader of backend teams with prior developer experience
Proven experience in the leadership of backend teams
The ability to explain backend architecture and design decisions to a technical and non-technical audience.
Experience with the Azure, Hybrid, and On-Premise infrastructure.
Experience with 2 or more of the following technologies: C# and TypeScript
Although you’ll mostly be hands-off coding, you will benefit from an ability to dig into the code base from time to time.
Experience in incident, problem resolution and debugging in a time critical environment.
Knowledge of tools such as Git and Azure DevOPs
Be great team players, collaborating effectively with Product, DevOps, infrastructure, and executive leaders
Experience working in an Agile team (in particular scrum).
Communicate clearly in English, both spoken and written (French is a bonus)
Responsibilities
Owning the overall technical vision for our operational applications.
Aligning the platform vision with business value.
Managing risk vs innovation.
Guiding the teams on the architecture of new services.
Working on high level design documentation.
Aligning and supporting your teams in new feature kick-offs.
Being the “grown-up” when the team needs help with decisions.
Assessing developer progress and help with blockers.
Working with product owners to ensure the overall vision is reflected in the backlog.
Providing feature teams with extra help and support when needed.
Ensuring there is a focus on stabilization, security and performance.
Empowering the team to maintain, coordinate and communicate releases considering dependencies.
Helping the team to standardize coding standards; libraries; tools and approaches.
Ensuring a high level of testing, with a target of a zero-bug policy for P1 to P3 bugs.
Encouraging the sharing of new ideas and passions
Setting objectives on an individual and team basis.
Mentoring, supporting and conducting regular 1:1s and performance reviews
Qualifications:
10+ years of professional experience in the software development industry, including at least 5 as a developer
At least 2 years of managing engineering teams of 5 or more
Strong understanding of enterprise architecture principles and best practices, software architecture, coding patterns, and developer tooling
Deep understanding of Azure or cloud-native infrastructure
Proficiency with microservices, event driven architecture, API design and implementation patterns
Nice-to-Have:
Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field
Experience designing and building solutions for globally distributed technology platforms containing confidential health information
Experience with .NET, Terraform, Azure PaaS, and Microsoft Power Platform
Experience building and solutioning technology products that need to adhere to regional and government compliance and regulation laws or standards
Blog, active GitHub repo, open source commits, conference, or community presentations
