Position: Senior Accountant – Inventory and Costing
Job Overview:
The Senior Accountant is a key contributor to the finance and accounting function with the objective of delivering a high degree of accuracy, integrity, analysis, insight and decision making to the inventory, costing and capital asset subject areas. A key component of the role is to develop and ensure compliance with financial controls and policies while maintaining simple, efficient and stream-lined processes that meet business needs. The position requires strong collaboration and peer relationships with various functions while providing superior financial support to the business. This role is one of the primary contacts in the Finance department for questions and ‘ad-hoc’ requests and will represent the Finance team and provide financial support and decision making on departmental and business initiatives.
Accountabilities:
Inventory & Costing Oversight:
Primary Finance responsibility for the end-to-end store and Grocery Gateway inventory count process; effectively collaborate with the Operations, Merchandising and IT teams
Develop annual inventory count schedules, document inventory count processes, policies, procedures and instructions
Primary point of contact for third party inventory count services company which includes scheduling inventory counts, providing feedback and process improvement opportunities
Support Inventory Management teams at the Central Kitchen and Distribution Centre by educating on and assisting with the development of best practice inventory count procedures
Perform period-end accounting activities, including GL analysis, journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
Work closely with Operations and Merchandising on inventory and shrink initiatives
Main point of contact for inventory and costing inquiries and costing issues
Navigate systems, investigate, analyze and resolve complex costing issues that require a high degree of concentration
Inventory and costing expert representing Finance and recommending best course of action on business initiatives
Responsible for all inventory and cost of goods sold working papers and audit procedures for the annual financial audit
Capital Asset Management:
Overall responsibility for the capital asset processes and policies and effectively managing and maintaining the capital asset subledger
Perform the accounting transactions for capital assets (capitalization, amortization and retirement of capital assets)
Prepare capital asset continuity schedules and Empire capital asset reporting on a period basis and ad hoc capital asset reporting requests from the business
Finance expert on capital asset policies, processes and procedures for consultation with business partners
Perform research on capital asset accounting issues, best practices and policies, as required
Responsible for all capital asset working papers for the annual financial audit
Assist the Senior Manager, FP&A with the capital asset budget and forecasts
System & Transactional Expertise:
Primary Finance responsibility for Longo’s main operating system (GOLD)
Work closely with IT, Data Integrity and Inventory Management teams on new item setup and to ensure optimal system functionality, data accuracy/integrity and accurate accounting transactions downstream
Provide FP&A and Finance teams with GOLD system support and ad hoc system and process flow analysis
Process Improvement, Internal Control and Special Projects:
Review, document and compare current processes and policies to industry “best practice” and identify opportunities to streamline and improve existing practices
Develop an advanced knowledge of processes and practices of the inventory lifecycle across multiple departments including ordering, inbound receiving, DC and store inventory management, internal transfers, shrink, point of sales and invoice reconciliation
Identify areas for cost reduction/avoidance and realization of savings
Identify business risks and implement internal controls to mitigate those risks
Participate in special projects and provide ad hoc financial analysis as required by the Finance group or business owners
Work closely with the IT function to identify and implement system improvements and optimization
Represents Finance on cross-functional business projects
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
Post-secondary University degree in Business or Finance
Accounting designation required (CPA)
Minimum of 4 years progressive finance/accounting experience including specialized experience in inventory and costing
Advanced knowledge of ASPE, IFRS, internal controls and finance/business best practices
Experience in a multi-unit retail or consumer goods distribution environment is preferred
Advanced level knowledge of Microsoft desk-top applications (Excel, Powerpoint, Access)
Excellent organization skills and written and verbal communication skills
Working Conditions:
The position requires periodic work outside regular business hours to meet ongoing accounting and project deadlines and business requirements as they arise
The work performed in an office environment with occasional exposure to disagreeable conditions
The work involves limited physical effort, as would normally be encountered in an office environment
The work involves extended periods of intense sensory effort
