Lotus Group Looking for Construction Superintendent at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Full Time

Lotus Group has partnered with our valued client, a commercial construction company based in Edmonton, with a focus on commercial office space, retail, and tenant improvement work. They are seeking a Construction Superintendent to join their team.

This individual is responsible for leading all field operations to construct the project and oversees on-site construction activities, ensures project plans and schedules are followed and the project is executed effectively, safely and within budget.

Key Requirements:

• Supervise all phases of the construction project, from pre-construction to closeout, ensuring adherence to project plans and timelines.
• Lead and manage on-site construction teams, including subcontractors, tradespeople, and laborers, ensuring they work efficiently and effectively.
• Develop and maintain project schedules, coordinate resources, and ensure milestones are met.
• Monitor project budgets and expenses, providing regular updates to stakeholders and ensuring cost control measures are implemented.
• Ensure all work is performed to the highest standards of quality and in compliance with project specifications and building codes.
• Enforce safety protocols on-site, ensuring a safe working environment and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.
• Identify and resolve construction issues as they arise, ensuring minimal disruption to project timelines and costs.
• Act as the primary on-site contact for clients, architects, engineers, and inspectors, providing regular updates and addressing any concerns.
• Maintain accurate project records, including daily logs, progress reports, and safety documentation.
• Coordinate and participate in project inspections, ensuring all deficiencies are addressed promptly.

• Demonstrated conflict resolution skills, problem solving abilities and professional judgment.
• Ability to identify staffing and hourly labour issues.
• Recognizes conflict between two or more parties and resolves disputes at the site level.
• Ability to coordinate activities of many subcontractors on site when outcomes for an individual trade are not aligned with other trades or the overall project.

• Liaises with client, other site contractors, union and labor relations and site and office representatives.
• Builds positive customer relations.
• Advises, supports, and intervenes, as necessary, to assist the project stakeholders to resolve issues and risks associated with the customer’s project.
• Motivate, coordinate, and maintain positive relations with subcontractors on site forces.

Relationship Management

• Ability to lead and run effective site meetings with the client, consultants, trades, own forces work and internal employees.
• Ability to identify and solicit internal or external support to solve construction challenges.

Team Member

• Consistently collaborates with construction/project manager and project team.
• Proactively manages potential problems, work interferences and schedule conflicts/setbacks.
• Liaises between field engineering, estimators and trade contractors to ensure construction complies with drawings and specifications.
• Understands project organization structure.
• Builds trust by doing what he/she says he/she will do.
• Collaborates to achieve results.
• Commits to team goals.
• Participates in team celebrations.

Accountability

• Visualizes an entire project, plans and creates the complete project sequence on site, identifies the critical path, and anticipates constructability issues.
• Contributes to development and implements Project Execution Plan (PEP) and resource-loaded three-week look ahead schedules.
• Creates, maintains and executes the project plan and schedule, and ensures compliance with budget and quality.
• Provides performance status reports for safety, cost forecast, and schedule.

Delegation

• Sets productivity targets for own forces and subcontractors and increases their effectiveness through collaboration, effective communication, and leadership.
• Communicates clear expectations to staff (ex – scope of work, level or detail, deadlines)
• Matches tasks and their unique requirements to appropriate strength and skills of staff.
• Monitors and supports progress.

Document Controls

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and internal operational systems.
• Knowledge of virtual construction software and tools.
• Maintains project administration correspondence, and complies with documentation requirements.

Engineering

• In-depth knowledge of and experience in construction industry and company operations, including building materials, construction specifications, methods and procedures.
• Understanding of project scope and ability to apply intermediate-complex engineering principles and embed solutions in construction plans and schedules.
• Proficient understanding and ability to apply logic to the schedule in order to build a plan using scheduling software.
• Ability to coordinate multiple scopes of a construction project; schedule, monitor, and coordinate own forces and trade contractors with three week look ahead schedules.

Health, Safety, and Environmental

• In-depth knowledge of and application of safety and environmental principles/procedures/legislation.
• Demonstrated experience implementing a strong safety culture.
• Assists to develop and implements the project safety plan, leading by example for health and safety practices and procedures.
• Works with project management to ensure implementation of the safety program, including integrating the program in all site plans and procedures and adhering to all safety and record keeping requirements.
• Responsible for all aspects of overall site safety.

Legal & Policy

• Thorough understanding of contract language and with the ability to identify and mitigate risks and identify and leverage opportunities.
• Understanding of labour agreement and jurisdiction assignment for multi-trade sites.
• Reviews and understands the contract and subcontracts, and develops a plan that identifies and mitigates risks and maximizes opportunities to ensure all financial targets, including budgets, forecasts and profitability levels are met.

Project Financials

• Thorough understanding of productivity rates or own forces work, labor costing system reports and ability to interpret cost reports.
• Ability to complete material, labor and equipment take-offs.
• Knowledge of cost and change management.
• Perform site level risk and opportunity management.
• Assist project manager in completing weekly or monthly detailed project cost reports including Labour Cost Reports and Project Cost and Forecast reports.

Key Qualifications:

• 10 years of progressive field supervision experience.
• Journeyman certificate or post-secondary diploma/engineering degree in a related discipline.
• NCSO designation required; enrolled in the Gold Seal program is preferred.
• Ability to identify and manage risk and opportunities on most construction projects.
• Demonstrates strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Ability to present at client meetings or for project pursuit work.
• Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize direct report tasks for prompt execution.
• Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Presents thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely.
