McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Construction Surveyor to grow and develop in the world of construction inspection, construction management, leadership, and client management skills. Come join our team in Langley, BC where you will be a key player in supporting our ongoing projects and expanding our services for existing and prospective clients throughout BC. You are a self-motivated problem solver excelling in a client-facing role that allows you to think on the spot. Our team services the entire province of British Columbia and requires someone with the ability to travel to service our assignments.
As this position is part of our Langley Branch, preference will be given to candidates who are based locally. Consideration will be given to candidates from other geographical locations.
Our construction management team provides a wide variety of services for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, including, highways, roads, bridges, and interchanges (Value of $1M to +$50M. The staff are a trusted and essential component of the project delivery team for the Ministry, taking the project from concept and constructability, through tendering and construction. This role is designated as a safety sensitive position.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Provide on-site contractor inspection to monitor the quality and progress of the work being performed
- Author daily, weekly, and monthly inspection reports
- Be forward thinking; understand the construction process and be able to learn the specifications and requirements of the work which you will be inspecting
- Understand the hazards and safe work procedures for each task and inspection location
- Report inspection issues to a senior supervisor
- Maintain inventories of bid item quantities and generate payment authorizations
- Provide reporting of work progress and issue construction memos to contractors as needed
- Identify field and design issues, facilitate corrective measures, and perform constructability reviews
- Liaise with contractor, client, and affected stakeholders during construction operations
- Lead or assist in the development of construction specifications and contract tender documents
- Understand, commit to and fulfill responsibilities under the McElhanney Quality Management System, ISO 9001 and all client quality, safety and environmental management systems
- Mentor junior staff members
- Ensure team is motivated and on track, project deadlines are met within budget, and quality of work meets or exceeds client expectations
What You’ll Bring:
- 5 years of progressive Construction Survey experience
- Experience with Trimble survey products specifically GPS, Total Stations, and Trimble Access Software an asset
- Diploma in Geomatics or related field would be preferred
- Previous field or construction related experience as assistant supervisor/inspector would be an asset, although not mandatory
- Ability to work: 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, during construction season
- Willingness to commit to remote or away from home construction projects for the duration of the project
- Experience with municipal and transportation, construction projects; Ability to interpret construction, contracts, drawings, and specifications and compare them with construction in progress, detecting faulty materials and workmanship, and suggesting appropriate remedies
- Have a forward-looking approach and the ability to foresee potential issues and problems so these items can be addressed and resolved
- Exceptional organization and follow-up skills; ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment that is constantly changing
