As a licensed plumber, you will maintain and repair the plumbing, sanitation, and heating systems and assist other maintenance personnel, as assigned.

What can I expect to do in this role?

  • install, service, replace and monitor plumbing equipment
  • determine work methods in accordance with government codes and by-laws
  • estimate material and labour requirements, requisition supplies, and keep records of supplies used
  • inspect and repair plumbing and heating fixtures; perform preventative maintenance
  • monitor and utilize various computerized electronic systems
  • supervise and instruct selected offender helpers including writing reports

NOTE:

  • This position is required to supervise and instruct inmate helpers and is eligible for the Custodial Responsibility Allowance


How do I qualify?


Mandatory

  • You are certified as a plumber by the designated Ministry of the Ontario government.
  • You currently possess a certificate in First Aid and Heartsaver or your are able and willing to obtain certification.


Technical knowledge:

  • You have the knowledge of techniques, equipment and tools used in plumbing practice.
  • You have the knowledge of relevant legislation, municipal by-laws and codes, provincial building codes.
  • You have the knowledge of blueprints, plans and drawings.
  • You have experience estimating labour and material requirements to install, service and replace plumbing equipment.
  • You have the knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with corporate policies and protocols in order acquire knowledge of and work within institutional security practices and procedures.


Communication skills:

  • You can discuss in detail requests for new installations or extensive repairs.
  • You can explain technical matters in easily understood terms in order to train and supervise inmate helpers on plumbing procedures and safe use of tools.
  • You can maintain control of inmate helpers, address behavioural issues, and liaise with correctional staff.
  • You can prepare behaviour and performance reports, maintain logs, prepare sketches and plans for manager approval.


Analytical skills:

  • You can assess causes of plumbing defects, blockages or leaks, and recommend best method of repair.
  • You can review computer output on automated systems and determine location of problem, materials and equipment needed to fix.


Computer skills:

  • You can perform quality assurance checks and locate/isolate problems raised by monitoring systems.
  • You can input data and complete activity reports.

    Employees who do not provide proof of full vaccination will be deemed ‘not vaccinated’ under the Employer’s policy and will be required to attend a vaccine education program, as determined by the Employer. Employees who are not vaccinated under the policy with a valid medical exemption will not be required to attend a vaccine education program. All employees working in congregate living settings must undergo regular rapid antigen testing, regardless of vaccination status.
