POSITION SUMMARY:

The Museum Educator is responsible for delivering relevant and responsive educational programming, both onsite and online, to engage diverse audiences in meaningful discussions about complex subjects. Collaborating closely with other Museum Educators, Indigenous Knowledge Resource Teachers (IKRTs), and Digital Learning staff, the Museum Educator facilitates programs that connect museum collections to contemporary issues, encouraging thoughtful reflection and inquiry. Programs span from kindergarten to post-secondary students and include teacher professional development seminars and adult learning groups. The Museum Educator tailors discussions to suit the needs and understanding of various groups, promoting active learning and lifelong curiosity.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Facilitate engaging gallery and hands-on lab learning experiences that align with 21st-century competencies, Ontario curricula, Indigenous worldviews, and Museum collections.
• Facilitate sessions on sensitive topics, ensuring content is delivered with empathy, cultural awareness, and respect for diverse perspectives.
• Create and deliver interactive online learning programs using digital tools to reach diverse groups.
• Work collaboratively with other educators to co-develop post-visit programming that reflects current events, museum themes, and anti-racist education.
• Support the management of teaching reference materials, collections, and educational resources, ensuring proper handling and storage.
• Assist in developing new programs through research, inquiry-based object learning, and pedagogical best practices.
• Engage in institutional initiatives by creating promotional and learning materials and providing professional development workshops for internal and external audiences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of a (4) four-year degree specializing in Education or a museum-related subject OR an acceptable equivalent in education and experience. An Ontario Teaching Certificate or specialist teaching certificate is an asset.
• Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience, including equity, anti-racist education, and Canada’s commitment to reconciliation.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching or leading discussions on sensitive subjects with an ability to navigate complex emotional dynamics while fostering an inclusive learning environment.
• Experience delivering onsite and online educational programs, with proficiency in digital tools and platforms (e.g., video conferencing, cloud storage, etc.).
• Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum and experience teaching children, youth, and adults using an active learning approach. Museum education experience is an asset.
• Excellent communication skills, including conflict resolution and managing discussions on complex topics.
• Strong organizational skills with a proven ability to research and develop educational content.
• Proficiency in working with digital, audio, and visual technologies to enhance the learning experience.
• Fluency in French is a significant asset.
