Program Description
The objective of this program is to help immigrants improve or acquire official language skills to participate in Canadian society and the labour market. The program measures success through learners’ progression through the language learning levels established under the CLB framework, with learners advancing one CLB level in at least one language learning skill of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The program supports ESL language instruction at a variety of language levels ranging from literacy and beginner to advanced levels. Courses provide learning opportunities in four identified language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The program also supports provision of employment-related language training as well as citizenship language training.
Position
Instructor – English as a Second Language as part of the Adult Non-Credit Language Training Program funded by MLITSD
The program runs 30 hours per week, with some flexibility in times that courses are offered
Location: Laurentian Learning Centre – North Bay, ON with a hybrid model of delivery (in-person and online)
$35.00/hour, including 4% vacation and 4% statutory holiday pay
Required Teaching Qualifications
TESL Ontario Certificate or willingness to undertake such certification, or
ESL Part 1 with ESL teaching experience, preferably with adult learners
Position Criteria
Knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmark framework
Demonstrated ability in second language training, preferably with adults, and in employment-related language training
Demonstrated ability to form partnerships with service partners including immigrant and refugee-serving organizations, etc.
Demonstrated ability in course development that cover key elements of living and working in Canada, including unit and lesson plans
Demonstrated ability to conduct ongoing learner assessments through the PBLA framework
Advanced computer skills and experience integrating technology into the classroom
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to work independently within a team setting
Willingness to collect and report data, using program software, and prepare MLITSD reports, as required
Flexible with respect to learner needs and learning styles based on a continuous intake model
