Position Details

Context:
The Western Region maintains and supports approximately 1,100 NL Housing rental properties on the west coast of Newfoundland through offices in Corner Brook and Stephenville. The region provides a wide range of services, including receiving and processing rental applications; administering rental accounts and lease compliance provisions; providing various client services and tenant relations including eviction prevention, and monitoring, facilitating and administering property maintenance. A variety of programs designed to support low to moderate income households and homeowners are also delivered. Regional staff members are involved in the delivery of the Provincial Home Repair, Home Modification, Home Energy Savings, Partner Managed Housing, and Rent Supplement Programs.

Duties:
The incumbent performs manual, at times physically demanding, semi-skilled work required for the maintenance and renovation of NL Housing units, as well as upkeep on the grounds. Work may involve the safe use of various tools used for construction and maintenance, as well as use of a corporate owned vehicle. The work of the position is often labour intensive and is performed inside (occupied and unoccupied units) and outside, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. Examples of work include loading and unloading trucks/trailers, shovelling snow and salting walkways, mowing lawns, keeping worksites clean from debris, moving appliances, cutting construction materials, and assisting trades staff in replacing drywall, tiles, windows, doors, and frames, as wells as assisting in mould/mildew remediation work. Other related work, including removal of debris and garbage from vacant units, collection of residential garbage at various locations, and custodial duties at multiple buildings i.e. (apartment, office, and seniors buildings) may be required.

Criteria

Screening Criteria:

• Completion of high school diploma (equivalencies may be considered)
• Experience in the building trades (semi-skilled level)
• Experience in ground maintenance (asset)
• Custodial experience (asset)

Assessment Criteria:

• Knowledge of the building trades at the semi-skilled level
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance and the tools and equipment used in the performance of such work
• Knowledge of custodial practices, including care and use of related equipment
• Knowledge of safe work practices, including the use and storage of chemicals and solvents
• Ability to effectively exchange information
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to manage time and tasks
• Relationship building

Conditions of Employment

Conditions of Offer:

• Proof of a valid class 5 driver’s license
• An acceptable driver’s abstract

Conditions of Acceptance:

• Willing to accept requirement for access to private transportation for business purposes
• Acknowledgement of requirement for heavy lifting (greater than 50 lb)
• Acknowledgement of prolonged periods of standing/walking
