Position Summary
Research Assistant, Cancer Care Your goal in this position is to provide assistance, organization and administrative support to research projects at a basic level. You have excellent communication (verbal/written), organizational and interpersonal skills; attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills. You have the ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload. You are also able to work independently and as part of a team. Flexibility is required for work beyond the job description at times as work demands. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families. The Research Assistant will be working in the Compassionate Conversations for Chinese Immigrants with Serious Illness Trial, led by Dr. Zhimeng Jia (Clinician-investigator at LTRI). The Research Assistant plays an integral role in the investigation of culturally tailored palliative care communication for Chinese immigrant patients admitted to the Hospital.
On a practical level, you will
- Collect, record and process data
- Interview/screen study participants, as applicable
- Perform transcription of recorded interviews, as applicable
- Perform literature searches
- Interact with numerous departments throughout the hospital
- Interact with various stakeholders, such as research team members and study participants
- Schedule appointments for research studies, including research team meetings
- Perform general office duties
- Assist with other duties as needed, and as they arise
Qualifications
- Graduate of community college or relevant experience
- A minimum of one year of recent and related experience in or familiarity with a research environment in palliative care setting preferred
- Meets the institutional requirements for clinical interpretation in Mandarin (Have completed a 70 hour language interpreter training program or an interpretation diploma / degree from an accredited university or college – e.g. LITP or LITC; Completed ILSAT or CILSAT; Have thorough knowledge of and adhere to the Code of Conduct for interpreters; Experience interpreting in a healthcare setting; Medical Terminology course/s; Participate in ongoing professional development) preferred
- Proficiency with NVIVO preferred
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical and scientific terminology
- Progressively responsible experience in a clerical position
- Basic computer skills, particularly database, spreadsheet and word processing
- Able to keep written records
- Able to understand written and verbal directions
- Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills are necessary
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
- Bilingualism in French/English an asset
