We are looking for a Manager, Safety Culture and Human Performance Program to join BWXT at either our Cambridge or Peterborough, Ontario location.
JOB PURPOSE
The Manager, Safety Culture and Human Performance Program is responsible for safety culture improvement and application of Human Performance principles and tools across the Canadian organization to foster a healthy safety culture and achieve event-free performance. The manager will work closely with the line organization to promote internalization of proven Human Performance techniques and safety culture behaviours into the sites’ work practices and processes. The manager, working with the BWXT Safety Culture Programs Manager, will ensure consistency with BWXT policies and practices for implementation of Safety Culture and Human Performance Improvement.
JOB STRUCTURE AND COMMUNICATIONS
Reports to the EHS & Regulatory Affairs Director.
This position has no direct reports.
Works with supervisors, EHS staff, and individuals at each of the sites, located primarily in Ontario.
Communicates and works closely with BWXT Safety Culture Programs Manager to ensure Safety Culture and Human Performance processes are implemented at BWXT in Canada within BWXT corporate and industry standards and best practices.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Develop, maintain and continuously improve the Safety Culture & Human Performance program across BWXT in Canada.
Demonstrate behaviours that support a strong safety culture and foster a safety conscious work environment (SCWE).
Partner with the line personnel and management to implement safety culture and human performance advancement initiatives across BWXT sites in Canada.
Develop ideas and materials that improve existing work methods, services and outcomes and promote the accomplishment of safe and compliant results.
Coordinate and conduct training for employees in Safety Culture and Human Performance Improvement derived from industry standards (INPO).
Evaluate the Safety Culture and Human Performance Program’s effectiveness.
Develop and implement safety culture and human performance improvement plans.
Develop and roll out routine Safety Culture and Human Performance Improvement communications.
Advise and support human performance employee teams in human and organizational improvement initiatives.
Ensure teams and management are conducting performance analysis activities to identify and solve problems/barriers to human and organizational performance.
Assist in implementation of human error reduction techniques by managers, supervisors, workers and departments.
Provide assistance to managers and team leaders in identifying human performance event factors and corrective actions.
Advise management of any emergent Safety Culture issues and suggested methods to address.
Communicate frequently with management to ensure awareness and understanding of any human performance issues.
Support investigations and causal analysis teams with human performance evaluation techniques to help in identifying human performance related causal factors and trends and in identification of safety culture implications.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
University degree in Engineering, Science, Business, or Organizational Effectiveness.
Strong background in Human Performance concepts, safety culture, organizational effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
Strong analytical skills.
Detail oriented.
Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
Advanced problem solving and decision-making abilities.
Excellent relationship building and influencing skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to communicate with diverse audiences.
Ability to interpret cross-functional processes, and to prepare clear, concise recommendations for process improvements in an appropriate style and format.
Ability to work on your own for long periods when developing process improvements, but also able to work effectively in a small team when required.
Ability to prioritize deadlines and to complete assignments accurately and on schedule.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience supporting a strong safety culture through the delivery or implementation of safety culture programs and/or human performance initiatives.
Experience in executing improvement initiatives through the use of established methodologies.
Experience in applying/interpreting industry technical and quality standards.
Prior experience implementing safety culture programs and/or human performance processes in a high consequence work environment is preferred but not required.
Prior experience working with the INPO 12-012, Traits of a Healthy Nuclear Safety Culture is preferred but not required.
