Ocean Choice is currently accepting applications for the position of First Mate for the NF Lynx, Ocean
Choice’s offshore shrimp vessel.
Qualifications:
Fishing Master’s Class 3 or greater.
Valid Transport Canada Seafarer’s Marine Medical and Marine Emergency Duties Certificate.
Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) Certificate.
Familiar with handling the vessel under the direction of the Captain as well as the operation of
critical systems.
Capable of controlling the vessel in the Captain’s absence.
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel as well as other computer and data entry software.
Valid Code of Conduct.
Responsibilities:
Manage the deck crew to ensure compliance with corporate safety policies and procedures; and
promote a safe courteous atmosphere.
Identify potential ship hazards associated with deck operations and advise the Captain
accordingly.
Monitor communication equipment and keep logs and records as required by Transport Canada
(TC) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
Maintain and routinely inspect all safety and emergency equipment; and ensure safety
equipment is well-organized, operable and available for emergency use and re-stocked as
necessary.
Record safety equipment inspections in appropriate logbooks.
Coordinate with the Captain the scheduling and execution of routine emergency drills as
required by the company and Transport Canada.
Perform navigational watches deemed necessary and prudent by the Captain in accordance with
normal bridge management procedures.
Maintain navigational and communication equipment in accordance with national standards,
company policy and the Captains standing orders.
Assist in scheduling safe vessel operation and navigation, hauling and shooting fishing gear and
any other actions deemed necessary by the Captain.
Report all incidents and accidents by carrying out the appropriate follow-up investigation,
recommendations and preventative measures.
Lead the Occupational Health and Safety Committee (OHS) and ensure all OHS requirements are
met on a trip-by-trip basis.
Ensure orientations and job cards are completed for all new crew.
Complete the vessel inspection checklist.
Conduct administrative duties including, vessel chart inventory, creating and maintaining
training schedules, vessel certifications and employee certification logs.
Ensure all fishing gear is ordered, received, accounted for and is properly stored.
Work a trip on/trip off rotation, as well as working in port with members of the opposite
rotation.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is available.
