Ontario Health is seeking a medical editor to join its Quality division. The Quality division works with its partners across the province to improve patient care, experience, and safety. It develops resources and tools to advance and promote quality improvement in Ontario.

The primary function of the medical editor is to provide editing and writing support to the Quality division and the broader Clinical Institutes and Quality Programs portfolio. The medical editor will work with writers in multidisciplinary teams to support the delivery of evidence-based content that aligns with Ontario Health’s strategy and vision.

Reporting to the team lead of Editors and Writers and working other editors, writers, and members of the Strategy and Operations team, the medical editor will apply strong editing and writing skills to a variety of reports written for a wide range of audiences (e.g., policy makers, practitioners, and the public).

Here is what you will be doing:

Editorial activities

• Editing texts for correct grammar, word usage, spelling, punctuation, and alignment with Ontario Health’s vision and strategy
• Applying plain language principles to reports
• A working knowledge and understanding of Ontario’s health system, including priority topic such as health equity
• Ensuring that relevant references are included and in the correct format
• Reviewing texts from the reader’s perspective to improve reading comprehension; eliminating the use of jargon and other barriers to communication; examining the content carefully to ensure consistency within the report; and explaining any necessary specialized terminology
• Preparing materials for publication: proofreading for accuracy, consistency with templates, and readability
• With the lead editor and business analysts, monitoring the progression of assigned reports through the editorial process to identify and resolve any delays or other issues interfering with on-time completion of projects
• Liaising with the lead authors of reports to discuss proposed changes and to explain concerns about clarity, about readability, and the rationale for particular word choices
• Providing editorial support, including writing and reviewing reports, webinar materials, updates, and other documents, on an as-needed basis for the broader Clinical Institutes and Quality Programs portfolio

Relationship management

• Developing strong relationships with colleagues to understand Strategy and Operations activities and writing needs
• Collaborating with colleagues, including attending editing and project meetings, to ensure products are delivered on time and meet quality standards
• Addressing and resolving editorial-related issues faced by the writing and planning teams

Here is what you will be doing:

Education and Experience

• At minimum, a bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in a communications or health sciences field
• A minimum of 3 to 5 years of editorial and writing experience
• Experience editing health-related reports for practitioners and for laypeople
• Experience editing health economics reports
• Familiarity with the latest American Medical Association Manual of Style
• Advanced MS Word skills, including use of styles, table of contents auto-generation, track changes, etc.

Knowledge and Skills

• Has exceptional organizational and time-management skills; can meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Has strong communication skills to revise content to the appropriate reading level and language for the targeted audiences, and to edit content for correct grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation
• Is proficient in plain language writing
• Is a creative, novel thinker who enjoys generating and exploring innovative ideas and solutions
• Is able to work effectively with colleagues, partners, stakeholders, and the public to reach consensus
• Is detail oriented to ensure accuracy and clarity
• Has an in-depth knowledge of editing and publishing processes
• Has a good understanding of clinical terminology and research findings
• Is able to work effectively with colleagues from different disciplines with varying degrees of experience
• Is able to work in a team-based environment
• Has exceptional organizational and time-management skills; can meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Has proficiency in MS Office: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams

Technical or professional qualifications or certifications/designations that are assets:

• Certification from the Editors’ Association of Canada
• Certification from the Board of Editors in Life Sciences
• Completion of courses in editing, proofreading, and/or plain language writing
• Completion of American Medical Writers Association courses in medical writing
• Basic or better French-language skills
