Specialist, Community Relations – Indigenous Health

What you‘ll do
- The Community Relations Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of a strategic plan to create meaningful, culturally-relevant, wellness-focused health promotion for Indigenous people.
- The role identifies and connects directly with First Nations, Indigenous community partners and organizations, to develop networks and connections that will lead to the identification of any potential barriers and cultural issues related to Indigenous health and works to improve communication strategies.
What you bring
- A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree or diploma in a related discipline and five (5) years of related experience including work in a community development role.
What you have
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Indigenous community and a demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts, including the determinants of health in relation to legislation and public policy. This understanding should be supported by significant knowledge of Canadian and Indigenous theoretical orientations and ideologies.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is required.
- Lived experience with Indigenous populations and demonstrated extensive knowledge of culture, protocols, traditions, and ideology of Indigenous people and organizations is an asset.
- Proven ability to relate to and build relationships with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds including Indigenous peoples, Indigenous service providers, provincial and federal agencies either one-on-one and in-groups.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate the development of relationships within the community.
- Excellent critical thinking, organizational and communications skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with multiple stakeholders. Creativity and strong problem-solving skills.
- Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
Preference will be given to persons who self-identify as Indigenous (status and non-status First Nations, Métis and Inuit).

Job Type: Temporary, Full Time (until January 31, 2024)
Salary Range: $61,718 – $88,720 /year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
