The Youth and Family Clinical Resource Counsellor is responsible for leading the coordination, development and delivery of the family education services for caregivers of patients with behavioural, emotional, and psychiatric problems in a tertiary/quaternary treatment program.
Compass is a province-wide service that supports evidence based care to all BC children and youth (0-25) living with mental health and substance use concerns. This is done by supporting community care providers with the information, advice and resources they need to deliver appropriate and timely care to children and youth close to home. Key attributes of Compass team members include flexibility, adaptability and a “lean-in” attitude. In this role, attention to detail, self-direction, problem solving, and initiative are essential.
What you’ll do
Develop, implement, deliver and evaluate the education program for families/caregivers of children/youth in the context of their psychiatric disorder in the tertiary/quaternary inpatient services, utilizing an evidence based model and adult learning principles by methods such as assessing individual/group learning needs; determining resources and learning environment required; developing, organizing and scheduling education sessions; ensuring concepts are well organized and presented appropriately for audience, facilitating educational groups, sessions and workshops; conducting formal presentations and demonstrations; and encouraging participants to transfer new information to real life situations.
In collaboration with nursing leadership and/or the Nursing Educator, share information and participate in in-service with team members on the delivery of psychoeducation to family/caregivers with children/youth in the designated program area.
Provide on-going education and related supportive counselling for families/caregivers to increase the families understanding of the nature and treatment of their child’s/youth’s psychiatric disorder.
Coordinate and participate in therapeutic groups.
Participate in the development, implementation, delivery, and evaluation of a comprehensive psychoeducation and support programs for parents/caregivers who are supporting a child/youth with a psychiatric disorder in collaboration with the interprofessional team.
What you bring
Masters degree in Child and Youth Care or a Master of Arts with Major in Psychology or Clinical Counselling, including course content relevant to Child and Youth Mental Health such as Infant, Child and Adolescent Development, Fundamentals of Clinical Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Group and Family Processes.
Three (3) years recent related experience working in a child/adolescent mental health care setting.
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
Valid Class 4 drivers License
You will have broad knowledge of:
Indigenous cultural safety, to provide health care services that are equitable, respectful and safe.
Family systems and life cycle events.
Normal growth and development of children and adolescents.
Cinical competence in mental health disorders in children and adolescents.
Trauma Informed Care including Collaborative Problem Solving.
Psychotherapeutic counselling and group dynamics, and demonstrated group skills.
Program evaluation.
Recognizing and managing transference and counter-transference in self and others.
Ways to engage and support individuals, milieu, and group processes.
You will have the ability to:
Teach, demonstrate, facilitate and coach family/caregivers.
Develop, and deliver individual or group-based patient/family education and counselling.
Develop, implement and evaluate educational programs, materials and strategies.
Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients and their families, the interprofessional team, and staff of external community agencies.
Problem solve, adjust to new or unexpected events, and to deal effectively with conflict situations.
Work collaboratively within a team environment
Organize work, show initiative and be self-directed.
Apply a wide range of computer skills and the ability to operate related equipment.
Carry out the duties of the position.
