Position: Support Worker

Reports to: Support Staff Supervisor/Shelter Manager

Qualifications:

• Previous experience working in a residential care setting.
• High School Graduate.
• Demonstrated knowledge of family violence and its impact on women,

men and children.

• Sensitivity in interactions with women and children in crisis.
• Awareness and sensitivity to cultural and religious differences.
• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and balance competing demands on time.
• Ability to carry out responsibilities with minimal daily supervision.
• Ability to demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of employment.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of community resources.
• Flexibility to meet needs of a 24-hour care facility.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Satisfactory Abuse Registry and Criminal Record check

General Responsibilities:

The Support Worker functions as a member of the Prairie Harbour staff team that provides 24-hour confidential crisis intervention service accessed through a crisis line and in person contacts, for abused women and their families. This position is responsible primarily in the area of providing residential support for women and children including encouraging self-awareness, self-worth, and empowerment. Responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the mission, goals and standards of The Portage Family Abuse Prevention, Standards Manual for Women’s Shelters, and the Service Purchase Agreement.

Client Services:

• On admission, assess the immediate physical and medical needs of the resident and her children and when necessary, make referrals
• Complete all intakes, information, and release forms accurately
• Identify and assess emotional and other needs of the client
• Assist with protection plans when assigned
• Assist with child care when necessary and support services when assigned
• Provide clients with shelter policy for safety and confidentiality
• House rules and guidelines

Provide clients support with:

• Activities of daily living and life skills that may include assistance in menu planning and meal preparation, clean-up, budgeting, money management, child routines, etc.
• Information and practical support regarding housing alternatives, moving, furniture estimates, parenting, life skills, and community resources
• Assists clients in completing assigned tasks through provision of supplies, encouragement, demonstration, and oversees their completion
• Co-ordinates recreational activities/groups for clients and their children including planning, obtaining supplies, and facilitation (e.g. games, cards, hair care, nail care, scrap booking, crafts, etc.)
• Communicates all relevant information to staff in a timely manner and at case management.
• Communicates with clients in a manner which establishes a trusting relationship based on mutual respect
• Acts as a role model and coach in the course of duty with clients
• Completes a structured written intake and assessment for each woman requesting service
• Provides skills to assist clients to make informed choices
• Completes a departure interview with each client, and provides the client with an evaluation form to be completed for the Executive Director.
• Facilitates problem solving process with each client and where possible reinforces and/or expands the problem-solving capacity of the client.

Team and Facility Responsibility

• Adheres to agency policy and procedures to maintain confidentiality and a respectful workplace
• Organizes workload and demonstrates effective time management
• Participates as a responsible team member by communicating and providing supports to other team members and back-up when required
• Actively participates in debriefing with team members and other staff as needed
• Maintain clear, direct and respectful communication with team members and management
• Participates in staff development and training activities
• Attends staff meetings as required for the purpose of program discussion, planning, staff communication and relations and general business;
• Provides emergency coverage to The Prairie Harbouras required in response to the needs and priorities of a 24-hour continuing care facility, which includes other duties as assigned.
• Assist with housekeeping duties such as cleaning and sanitizing common areas, washrooms, laundry, client rooms, garbage disposal
• Prepares and completes statistics forms and other administrative forms as required or requested
• Provides professional and accurate documentation for all client interactions on each shift exchange and for data entry on HIFIS computer program.

Organizational Responsibilities

• Maintains agency confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential;
• Develops and maintains ongoing positive and professional public relations with outside agencies, groups, and individuals;
• Maintains an up-to-date working knowledge of related services;
• Adheres to the policies and procedures of The Portage Family Abuse Prevention;

Shelter Support Functions

• Whenever necessary, assists janitor/housekeeper with janitorial duties, laundry, sanitizing rooms, garbage disposal, recycling, inventory of goods (such as groceries, toiletries, diapers, etc.).
• Prepares list and orders groceries, and puts them away when received;
• Receives, sorts and organizes donations;
• Transports donations to MCC;
• Provides child care as required;
• Assists clients with transportation needs;
• Identifies and meets practical needs of clients.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Casual

Salary: $15.00-$17.00 per hour
