As an Academic Health Centre and teaching institution, education is a core business of Unity Health Toronto complementing patient care and research. The Education Portfolio at Unity Health provides leadership and support to the learning needs of all staff, students, clinicians, residents, patients and their families while exploring new ways to meet those needs with emerging technologies, resources and industry best practice.
The Digital Education program supports the design and development of online learning initiatives across Unity Health Toronto. As experts in both educational technology and adult learning, the Digital Education team helps stakeholders across the organization take their projects from concept to fruition. Typical projects include creating an interactive e-learning course, developing an online quiz, posting a video or digital resource, or coordinating enrolment for synchronous education sessions. The Digital Education program also provides strategic direction and consultation for enterprise-wide projects or policies that contain a digital education component.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, Technology Enabled Education, the Digital Education Specialist responsibilities include:
Providing ongoing development, maintenance and oversight for LMS and eLearning strategy at Unity Health;
Developing new learning experiences delivered through electronic media, e.g., eLearning modules/assets, while acting in the capacity of a key member of the Education Portfolio;
Responsible for managing all aspects related to the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of online course material and curriculum;
Coordinating with diverse professions across Unity Health to provide appropriate technology enabled learning;
Performing Learning Management System (LMS) technological and administration accountabilities as required;
Performing reporting and analytics responsibilities;
Performing vendor management responsibilities, including managing learning technology Vendor relationships;
Liaising with peers in other hospitals to ensure adherence to industry best practice;
Creating and promoting an organizational culture of learning at Unity Health;
Facilitating learning and training initiatives where appropriate;
Participating in Accreditation process as required;
Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop, maintain and update eLearning modules for the hospital (may include research, structure, content, courseware design/development, course materials, coding/programming, pre and post testing and evaluation/quality assurance);
Utilize authoring tools, graphic design tools, scripting languages and animation software (including narration and video components) to create, maintain and improve eLearning modules;
Leverage authoring constructs such as branching, looping, counters and answer evaluation/remediation;
Provides training on instructional design and use of development tools to facilitate decentralized development of content;
Reviews and maintains eLearning modules to ensure they meet emerging educational needs/trends and also industry best practice and internal standards and obsolete modules are decommissioned/updated;
Develops reusable assets that can be leveraged by educators;
Adheres to and incorporates adult education principles in the development and delivery of technology-enabled education;
Provides user accounts administration with the LMS when necessary;
Creates and maintains course catalogues and packages, within the LMS;
Coordinates with internal stakeholders to develop learning paths within the LMS for specific staff populations;
Develops and implements appropriate metrics and reporting on user access and completion of training through the LMS, LMS usage in general and custom reporting, as appropriate, to support Hospital needs;
Investigates and implements opportunities for further integration of LMS with Hospital systems and processes, where appropriate;
Provides ongoing maintenance and development of LMS to ensure LMS continues to meet Hospital needs, e.g., driving improvements, evaluating new solutions, etc.;
Develops short- and long-term plans that enhance and support learning needs of the Hospital through eLearning and new learning technologies;
In collaboration with Director, Technology Enabled Education and other leaders in education, initiate, plan, execute, close, and control enterprise-level projects and impact events related to eLearning and other technology enabled education tools, specifically employee engagement, leadership development, change management and recognition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of a recognized degree or training program in multimedia development, communications, education, information technology, web development or recognized equivalent required;
Five (5) years related experience in an e-learning development, instructional design and/or learning technology solution role required;
Demonstrated knowledge of leading emerging practices in e-learning and other learning technologies required;
Demonstrated knowledge of educational technology, e.g., e-learning authoring software, multimedia development software, learning management systems, web development and web based applications required;
Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design, multimedia learning, and adult learning theory required;
Demonstrated experience with the Articulate 360 suite (Storyline, Rise, Review) for the development of online courses required;
Experience working in the healthcare industry preferred;
Demonstrated experience with administering an organizational learning management system preferred;
Demonstrated experience in measurement and evaluation of the effectiveness of e-learning and other technology based learning required;
Experience working with Trainers/Educators to convert existing curriculum content to an e-learning format required;
Experience with graphic design and media development tools required, e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Audition for developing interactive online courses required;
Demonstrated computer proficiency including advanced skills with: Microsoft office applications; HTML5 and CSS coding required;
Demonstrated creativity to identify optimum applications of technology to meet a variety of educational objectives required;
Demonstrated ability to design creative, interactive online courses required;
Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, prioritize tasks and mange heavy workloads/conflicts required;
Demonstrated ability to take the initiative, work autonomously and remain flexible as plans change required.
