Position Summary

At Quinte Healthcare, Operating Room (OR) Nurses are highly skilled healthcare professionals, who play a critical role within our inter-professional care team. Reporting to the Perioperative Manager, the OR Nurse assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of the preoperative and perioperative patient. The RN is responsible for ensuring that his/her professional practice and behaviour meets legislative requirements and the standards of the profession as designed by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Required

• Current Certificate of Registration in good standing, or eligible for registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario,
• Current CPR or BCLS certificate,
• Completion of a Post Graduate Program in Perioperative Nursing,
• Current (within past 3-years) minimum 1-year operating room or related surgical patient care experience,
• Medical Surveillance is required for personnel routinely working with the class of lasers used in the OR. An eye exam must be arranged through Occupational Health & Safety Services prior to commencing work this area,
• In compliance with radiation safety regulations, personnel employed in the BG OR must be registered with the National Dosimetry Service and as such must provide appropriate personal identification information prior to commencing work in this area,
• Must be available for all shifts and on-call duty, and
• Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload.

Duties

• Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills – to assume in-charge responsibility to function independently,
• Provision of care for patients within an inter-professional environment, including assessment, treatment, teaching and education,
• Performs acts requiring specialized knowledge, skills and judgement necessary for care of acute surgical patients,
• Teaching and coaching to patients and families,
• Participation in mentorship of new and/or current staff & students,
• Maintains nursing records in accordance with College of Nurses Standards,
• Practicing in compliance with provincial legislation, hospital policy and procedures, professional regulatory standards and best practices within the nursing profession,
• Maintaining professional competence by completing regular professional development including annual training and education as indicated,
• Participates in unit/dept. and hospital quality improvement initiatives,
• Adheres to a safe and healthy workplace and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established mechanisms for injuries and hazards and adheres to health and safety related policy and procedures,
• Adapts and adheres to the values of QHC while promoting and advocating for an enhanced patient experience, and
• Other duties as assigned.
