Reporting to the CEO, the VPAF has overall responsibility for providing direction and leadership of the finance and accounting function including accounting, budgeting, reporting, forecasting, financial analysis, asset control, risk assessment and mitigation, expense management, finance, treasury/banking, and credit and collections. The VPAF will develop and manage the financial systems for RecycleSmart to reliably achieve its strategic objectives while mitigating risk and collaborate with operations to ensure those leaders have the necessary tools to make decisions impacting the financial health of the Company. Only candidates with Canadian CA or CPA will be considered.

They need to be passionate about the role the Company can play in updating and optimizing waste management among mid-sized Canadian organizations, with the ability to execute on the strategic plan. The ideal candidate will have strong executive presence and the ability to inspire, motivate, and excite various stakeholders.
Relevant Experience: the ideal VPAF will have “been there and done that” with respect to developing and leading a high-performance accounting and finance team operating in a high growth B2B environment. Working collaboratively with the CEO, the VPAF will be a key member of the leadership team mandated with harnessing the knowledge, energy and creativity of the entire RecycleSmart team to capitalize on the significant business opportunity facing the Company.
Passionate Advocate: within the business context, the VPAF must recognize that RecycleSmart has a higher calling to be part of the solution to help save our planet by assisting Canadian organizations to improve their waste management practices. The VPAF will be a key part of the leadership team that actively seeks out ways and opportunities to increase the profile and general awareness of RecycleSmart in the country and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic and Team Leadership
Work with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop, implement, and accomplish strategic plans, goals, and objectives to ensure effective execution of projects.
Provide recommendations to strategically enhance the financial performance and business opportunities for the Company.
Communicate and collaborate with all departments and provide senior management with advice on financial implications and risk of business activities and make recommendations for mitigation.
Provide leadership, coaching, and guidance to the Accounting team, keeping them informed of operational performance and priorities, and providing ongoing feedback related to employee performance.
Provide input and participate in workforce planning, succession planning, performance reviews, recruitment and retention activities.
Financial Management
Ensure timely and accurate reporting of monthly financial statements
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Controller and accounting team
Prepare complex accounting treatment analysis when required
Develop and implement relevant key performance measures and conduct meaningful proactive analysis, reporting on them to management, to improve critical business decisions
Establish and maintain stable cash-flow management policies and procedures and ensure that cash resources are available for daily operations and business development.
Ownership of the year-end financial statement and review engagement processes, including managing staff in the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with APSE
Facilitate and lead annual review engagements, serving as the liaison between the external auditors and the CEO and shareholders.
Ensure in good standing with all provincial and federal tax authorities
Maintain payroll accounting
Financial Systems
Review and recommend modifications to accounting systems and procedures to improve efficiency
Work with other departments to improve information flow and data integrity issues
Assist in implementation of a new ERP system and lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on using ERP as a competitive advantage.
Risk Management
Establish internal control processes to manage and grow the business while anticipating and correcting problems in advance.
Manage all legal issues in conjunction with external legal counsel.
Ensure reliable control systems, audits, record keeping, insurance coverages and legal/regulatory requirements are in place.
Ensure appropriate insurance in place
External Relationships
Develop and maintain key relationships with external partners, suppliers, banks, lender, professional advisory firms, etc.
Maintain excellent relationships with RecycleSmart’s accountants and bankers, ensuring the timely flow of information both ways to enhance efficiencies and build confidence.
Oversee the preparation and filing of statutory reporting and other financial reports to ensure compliance with ASPE, CRA and others.
Qualifications Required for the Role of VPAF
The successful candidate will be a leader with a proven track record of being a key member of a team that has grown at least one dynamic organization in a B2B environment. They will be an innovative, strategic thinker with demonstrated skills in building teams and partnerships, performing at the highest standards of excellence in the areas of integrity, client and employee satisfaction, financial performance, and risk management.
Competencies, Skills and Experience
In addition to those competencies and skills already outlined above, the following were deemed very important for the VPAF’s success:
10+ years of senior leadership experience in finance and administration, with at least five years as a VP or Senior Controller, IFRS experience an asset
Experience within a high growth, entrepreneurial environment, preferably with a B2B company
Strong manager and facilitator of change

A proven leader with an inherent ability to lead and inspire others
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and sharp business acumen
Ability to coach, mentor, and develop team members for current and future success
Previous hands-on experience generating financial statements in a controller level position considered an asset
Ability to interpret financial statements and present logical plain language conclusions geared to the respective audience, and can help coach others to improve their financial acumen
Experience implementing an ERP system, ideally on an MS platform considered an asset
