0.6 FTE Alternative Education Teacher / Counsellor
Temporary: Immediately to June 30, 2023
Qualifications
BC Certification
Bachelor of Education with a major or concentration in Special or Alternate Education
Master’s degree in Counselling
Coursework in the education of students with behavioural disorders; learning disabilities and social/emotional challenges
Successful teaching experience in Special or Alternate Education at intermediate and/or secondary grade levels
Demonstrated ability and expertise to use a wide range of teaching, assessment, intervention, and management strategies
Knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of needs
Ability to carry out a variety of assessments to support students’ demonstrations of understanding
Ability to facilitate curriculum at a grade 6 through 12 level
Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate an IEP in consultation with parents, students, staff, district and community resource personnel
Demonstrated ability to create, modify and deliver subject area such as math and language arts to multi age groups
Understanding of the RTI framework and various Tier 1, 2 and 3 interventions to support literacy, numeracy and social-emotional learning
Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and management skills
Ability to work collaboratively with all staff and supervise EA / CYCW support staff
Ability to provide educational outreach services, when required
Experience leading groups of adolescents and/or adults in outdoor setting an asset
Wilderness safety and/or outdoor certification and experience an asset
Experience in Cognitive-Theory-Based Counselling with an understanding of Trauma Informed Practice
Previous successful experience in Counselling
Ability to consult with school-based teams, parents, district staff, and community agencies
Must be familiar with Inter-ministerial social agency protocols
Training in Suicide Risk Assessment
An understanding of counselling supports through a Response to Intervention lens
