Position Summary
Working within the Education Department, Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School), Under the direction of the Principal, the Secondary and Post-Secondary Coordinator is primarily responsible for the coordination, promotion, and administration of the Secondary and Post-Secondary Program. The Secondary and Post-Secondary Coordinator will identify barriers, develop relationships, coordinate assigned events, budgets, payments, and services offered by the program. Work one-on-one with secondary and potential post-secondary students to support and mentor them on their journey to post-secondary education, through planning career goals and advocating for their continued success. The Coordinator will support a culture of learning, through organizing community meetings, creating relationships, participating in awards, hosting workshops, and working with other teams in the company to support and celebrate students.
This position will provide support in a work environment that is conducive to teamwork and efficiently delivers services to students as part of the Education, College, and Schools team. While a considerable degree of time and attention are given to the day-to-day administration of the Post-Secondary Support program, this position is part of the College team and may aid Seabird College when necessary.

What you’ll do
- Strong knowledge of Post-Secondary Policy and National Post-Secondary guidelines.
- Manage the day-to-day administration of the program including the processing of payments to institutions and students and other administrative functions and ensure the timely management of the program within the approved budget. Including but not limited to, incentives, school supplies, school fees, allowances, and other support services.
- Oversee budget planning, implementation, and grants for the Secondary and Post-Secondary program.
- Receive applications and recommend funding for post-secondary applicants on the basis of the approved policy within budgetary constraints.
- Liaise with post-secondary institutions regarding pre-requisites, registration, student supports, payments and administration matters.
- Recommend funding for awards and scholarships in alignment with post-secondary policy and provide advice on policy changes as needed.
- Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
- Organize education awards, events and participate in graduation planning including but not limited to, distributing gifts, honour roll, incentives, and supplements.
- Provide consulting services to community groups and agencies, businesses, industry, and other organizations involved in providing community-based career planning support or resources
- May administer and interpret tests designed to determine the interests, aptitudes, and abilities of clients.
Student Supports:
- Work one-on-one with students in grades 8-12 to gain a sense of their career goals and assist them with crafting long-term plans for reaching their education or career objectives.
- Work one-on-one with students interested in post-secondary education to assist them with crafting long-term plans for reaching their education or career objectives, enrolment, university readiness, and helping to assess and reducing barriers, such as transportation, travel, tutoring, study strategies, etc.
- Meet with students on campus at their post-secondary institutions at least 2 times per year to closely monitor their progress, assess unmet needs, support, and advocate for the student to ensure successful post-secondary completion.
- Assist in collecting labor market information for students regarding job openings, entry and skill requirements and other occupational information.
- Assess students’ need for assistance such as rehabilitation, financial aid or further training and refer students to the appropriate services and track through reporting. Work with students to obtain bursaries, scholarships, and loans necessary to ensure that they secure the resources necessary to complete their program of study, including distributing financial resource materials to students in a timely manner.
- Guide students in determining their interests and abilities using a wide range of methods, such as aptitude assessments and planning materials
- Counsel individual learners, working with them to aid in the development of both hard and soft skills.
- Conduct group workshops on a variety of topics, including successful job interviewing, using university employment databases and career development resources, researching graduate programs, etc.
- Assist with planning and publicizing Seabird College programs and events such as courses, workshops, job fairs, and orientation sessions.
- Collaborate with instructors, teachers, and staff to help achieve School and College-wide goals and contribute to its long-range planning.
Strategic Planning and Support:
- Support Seabird College staff in guiding students in determining their interests and abilities.
- When necessary, work with staff to ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted to the Ministry or Indigenous Services Canada in a timely, professional, and accurate manner.
- Work with the Principal and teachers to plan Professional Development that meets the objectives of the school, Seabird College, and the strategic plan.
- Preparing annual applications for post-secondary funding and reporting on those funds as required.
- Collaborate with instructors, teachers, and staff to help achieve school and college wide goals and contribute to its long-range planning.
Other:
- Be a positive role model by actively supporting the vision, mission and philosophy of the school and college.
- Advocate for the success of students and the pursuit of post-secondary education.
- Prepare updates and briefing reports as necessary.
- Prepare applications for post-secondary funding from a variety of government agencies and report on same.
- Encourage student responsibility, personal discipline, and self-motivation.
- Provide the Principal and ED with regular activity reports, including statistics, as well as annual summary reports.
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the principal.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field with experience planning and implementing budgets and/or proposal writing
- Post-Secondary degree in education, career counseling or similar field
- 3-5 years career counseling leadership experience in a First Nations environment
- Proficient computer skills including bookkeeping software, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Budget and proposal writing experience
- Ability to be a positive role model for staff and students and consistently inspire high academic achievement
- Ability to work well with students and the public and consistently demonstrate a high level of professionalism working with students and the public with respect, tact, and discretion
- Ability to set work priorities in a multi-task environment and meet tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills
- Proven ability to maintain student, staff, document, and records confidentiality
- Knowledge of the Stó:lò culture and Halq’eméylem language.
- Knowledge of MS 365 Office Suite; outlook, word, excel.
- Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
- Knowledge and respect of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
- Experience working with First Nations communities is considered an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
