Some Special Ed. Teachers will work with students who have physical and sensory disabilities, such as blindness and deafness, and with students who are wheelchair-bound. They may also work with those who have autism spectrum disorders and emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Special Ed. Teachers help students with severe disabilities develop basic life skills, such as how to respond to questions and follow directions.
Qualifications/Requirements:

Must hold a valid BC Teaching Certificate
Diploma in Special Education.
A minimum of 2 years’ full-time occupational experience or 5 years’ demonstrated experience in the field of study is required.
Experience working with various ages from young children to adolescents in a learning environment (public and/or private).
Knowledge of a variety of diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Behavioural Disorders, FASD, and more.
Solid knowledge of human growth and development phases and learning theories.
Offers diverse teaching strategies to meet the needs of different types of learning.
Training and experience with the following programs, are considered an asset: Classroom and Community Support Worker Program, Special Needs Worker Program, Applied Behaviour Analysis Therapy Program.
Must have experience working with “Implementing Read Well, Reading Mastery and Saxon Math programs.
Provide effective support for students with special needs.

Primary Responsibilities:
Working with a team of the following individuals: Teachers, Counsellors, and Parents, The Special Ed. Assistant will develop individualized educational programs (IEPs) specific to each student’s needs. These IEPs outline goals and services for each student, such as sessions with the school psychologists, counselors, and special education teachers. Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress routinely throughout the year.
Observe and document learner strengths, achievements, and needs through daily learning activities. Carries out functional (informal) assessment activities to assist the teacher in developing learner profiles.
Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans.
Assist the classroom Teacher with adapting lessons to meet the needs of students.
Plan, organize and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities.
Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one sessions.
Discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators as required.
Supervise and mentor Education Assistants who work with students with disabilities.
Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and after graduation
Assist in the collection of data for the purpose of evaluating student progress. Maintain appropriate records as requested by the administration.
Develop and prepare appropriate materials for learning as needed.
Assist teacher in communicating academic and social progress to parents during teacher/parent conferences.
Provide such assistance as the principal considers necessary for the supervision of students at the School and at School functions whenever and wherever held, which shall include, but not limited to, attendance at and participation in all evening School activities and the Seabird Island Annual Festival.
Maintain and acquire special training specific to the needs of the children as approved by the Principal.
Make an effort to learn the Halq’eméylem language and consistently promote the spoken language in the classroom.
Attend and participate in all schools staff meetings and cultural events.
Communicate from a bias-free perspective.
Help to maintain a classroom environment that supports traditional values.
Perform other child care worker or emergent duties which are within the scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities required by this position.
Conduct her/himself in such a manner as not to bring discredit or disrespect upon the profession of teaching, the Employer or the Seabird Island Community.
Abide by the policies set out by the School and Band.
