We are seeking a VP of Occupational Health, Safety and Security to join our client’s team.
In this role, you will play a critical part in positioning HSS as an integral part of the organization’s strategy and overall business goals. You will provide leadership and ensure effective processing of operational HSS activities while overseeing the day-to-day oversight of safety, security, and investigation processes.
As the Head of HSS, you will validate that all processes are completed in compliance with the SMS and handle HSS issues as they arise. Additionally, you will oversee the development, implementation, monitoring, and controlling of HSS programs.
A key aspect of this role is people leadership. You will lead and align a team of HSS members by focusing the team’s activities and holding each individual accountable for results. You will ensure HSS activities are effective and results-focused, with a keen eye for identifying opportunities for improvement.

Responsibilities:
– Implement HSS strategies aligned with business goals
– Ensure employees show commitment to safety, quality, and environmental policies
– Establish and maintain roles and responsibilities in the SMS
– Establish and maintain a reporting system for safety hazards, incidents, and accidents
– Identify and manage hazards through risk management analysis
– Investigate and analyze hazards, incidents, and accidents
– Establish and maintain a safety data system to monitor trends
– Monitor and evaluate corrective actions related to safety concerns
– Report environmental and safety concerns to the Chief Safety Officer
– Direct environmental and sustainability programs
– Coordinate safety initiatives with internal and external groups
– Incorporate safety principles into business planning
– Monitor safety concerns in the railway industry
– Develop and implement SMS training
– Facilitate SMS revision to ensure regulatory compliance
– Allocate necessary resources for SMS development and maintenance
– Advise stakeholders on safety performance
– Ensure safety reports and monitoring activities are properly executed
– Notify relevant stakeholders of immediate safety concerns
– Supervise external service providers
– Establish best practices in accordance with regulation and industry trends
– Oversee budget and cost effectiveness
– Build and lead a motivated and educated HSS team
Requirements:
– Completion of relevant Bachelor’s degree
– Relevant health and safety qualifications – CRSP or CHSC preferred
– Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) qualification
– 10+ years of industrial experience construction, airline, rail or mining operations and maintenance environment
– 10+ years of supervisory or management experience
– Direct experience and demonstrated use of risk assessment methods and root cause analysis methods
– Direct experience in maintaining and auditing safety, quality and environment management systems
– Strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record in mobilizing a successful team
– Strong team leadership experience and ability to provide appropriate training and coaching measures
– Knowledge and demonstrated application of relevant regulatory requirements
– Knowledge of the interpretation and application of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and construction site and safety coordination best practices, procedures, processes, and related legislation and regulations of complex infrastructure projects
– In-depth experience and knowledge of WSIB legislation, policies, practices, and nuances
– Proficient in MS Office applications
