SHIFT Energy is part of the Mariner group of companies. With 3 employee-owned divisions and a portfolio of 30 software start-ups, we’re driven by our longer-term vision – not just quarterly financial results. We’re now in our 20th year of operations.
SHIFT is focused on reducing the carbon footprint of large buildings – the silent driver behind 20% of the world’s carbon emissions. From data centers to office towers and hospitals, we are working at the leading edge of emissions reductions, developing AI-based supervisory control systems that reduce GHG associated with the large-scale heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
Our small team of researchers and engineers is changing the way these buildings work for the better. We are looking for an HVAC / controls simulation engineer to join the team full time. Working at the intersection of HVAC simulation and automatic control, you will be part of a high-performing team of multi-disciplinary experts creating leading edge control software to minimize GHG emissions and energy use in larger buildings: work with our development team to integrate these control algorithms into our existing code base: and validate these solutions in real-world deployments.
Job Description
As the HVAC Simulation Engineer, you will:
Provide leadership to our team in the area of HVAC simulation specific to large buildings
Work closely with other R&D team members to identify and scope simulations needed to execute R&D projects
Define the associated simulation requirements and specifications and implement those simulations in appropriate toolsets (Energy Plus, Spawn of Energy Plus, Modelica)
Analyze, validate, and continuously improve simulator performance and functionality
Make recommendations on the kind of data that should be generated for logging
Identify subpar operation or blind spots in product operation and recommend improvements to control algorithms.
Monitor industry, government and academic research and technology developments in HVAC simulation space
Participate in industry associations and collaboration projects (IBPSA, BOPTEST, Project 1 and others as identified)
Recommend measures to make our simulations more effective and create competitive advantage through HVAC simulation
Contribute to product vision and roadmap
Qualifications
Must haves:
Demonstrated Experience with HVAC simulation for large buildings (ideally using Modelica or Spawn of Energy Plus)
A working knowledge of HVAC Equipment found in large buildings (including chillers, air delivery equipment, and boilers) and the associated HVAC controls
A sound understanding of the fundamentals of Thermodynamics
A sound understanding of feedback control systems
B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics
Experience with Python programming
Our ideal candidate would have these additional qualities and capabilities:
A strong interest in technologies to combat climate change
Passionate and curious: you want to master the field of simulation
Comfortable taking on new problems and challenges
Always improving your skills and knowledge
A self-starter with the ability to recommend priorities to the project leader
A strong analyst with great problem-solving skills
