The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is seeking applications for 15 Student Mentors for the 2024 Summer Learning Programs. Reporting to the Summer Learning Program Coordinator and Site Supervisor, the successful candidates will support elementary-aged students in the areas of early reading, mathematics, assistive technology, as well as multilingual learners through small-group or individualized learning instructional opportunities. Successful candidate(s) will assist with planning, facilitating and documenting student learning within a multitude of elementary subjects while assisting teachers in the development and delivery of instruction and assessment to support the Summer Learning Programs.
The Student Mentor program is intended for students currently enrolled in a post-secondary program (college, university, apprenticeship, etc.), especially those interested in pursuing a future career in education.
This year (2024), Summer Learning Programs will include both in-person and online learning formats. All educational staff, including the Student Mentors, will be expected to work in-person supporting students and educators enrolled in all programs. Programs will be located at Terry Fox Elementary School (Barrie) and the SCDSB Education Center.
Qualifications, Skills And Experience
currently enrolled in a post-secondary education program (college, university, apprenticeship, etc.)
interest in student instructional/engagement learning strategies that support learning in the areas of mathematics, early reading instruction, multilingual learners, and/or the use of assistive technology
self-directed learner
ability to work independently
must be self-motivated
cooperative and works well with others (staff and students) in a team driven environment
willingness to learn and will carry out assigned duties to support the successful operation of the programs
Responsibilities
assist students in the Summer Learning Program
maintaining STEAM, Maker Space, and robotics learning kits
planning and maintaining site organization
promoting student care and respect for learning materials, tools, and technology
promote a growth mindset in learning (i.e., model and demonstrate how mistakes and challenges are essential to the learning process)
adapt and support student learning activities/strategies such as robotics, coding, and STEAM education
reflect on objectives and provide strategies for increased student learning and engagement
observe elementary students and ensure they are learning in a safe manner
model oral communication skills required in an education setting (i.e., collaboration, communication, character, creativity, critical thinking, and citizenship)
interact with various elementary school staff and complete any other duties as assigned by the Summer Learning Program Coordinator
Salary Range: $19.00 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay
Date / Hours: July 4 and July 5, 2024 (8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. – 6 hours per day for 2 days of mandatory training)
July 8 to July 26 2024 (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – 4 hours per day for 15 days for the Summer Learning Program)
