Function & Overview
Under the supervision of the Vice-President Academic, the Unit Manager – Centre for Teaching & Learning (CTL) is responsible for the overall leadership of the Centre, a newly developing organizational unit at Six Nations Polytechnic. As such, they play a key role in laying the groundwork and helping to steer the overall direction of the CTL; enhancing academic achievement, knowledge and skills acquisition climate, and overall teaching and learning experience. The Unit Manager – Centre for Teaching & Learning is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance and operating policies of the institute.
Duties
The duties of the Unit Manager – Centre for Teaching & Learning include, without limitation:
Program Planning, Delivery & Quality Assurance
Developing annual plans and timelines for programming offered in the Centre; and leading the day-to-day delivery of CTL programming;
Identifying program delivery needs and proposing approaches to meet identified needs;
Working with relevant units to produce and implement clear, inclusive, evidence-based plans that promote and sustain teaching excellence;
Contributing to student support strategies with particular attention to ensuring early academic intervention for struggling learners, in order to increase retention and improve curricular achievement;
Assisting teaching staff with implementing and assessing instructional methods and technologies, to advance quality of instruction and breadth of delivery modalities;
Researching and evaluating emerging technologies as they apply to instruction, and liaising with Information Systems in recommending and promoting best practices for “ed. tech.” at SNP;
Fostering the creation of instructional learning communities;
Academic Development
Providing vision and leadership in the development of situated best practices in Indigenous pedagogies across secondary, postsecondary, skills training, and lifelong learning; and across in-person, online/virtual, blended/hybrid, and HyFlex modalities;
Guiding teaching staff in the assessment of core competencies, course learning outcomes (CLOs), and Indigenous Learning Outcomes (ILOs), and in transforming courses in support of same;
Advising teaching staff in the use of educational technologies, and specifically in effective utilization of the learning management system (LMS) and online classroom environment for all courses;
Implementing, monitoring, and reviewing curriculum assessment strategies, including coordination of course/instructor surveys;
Surveying regulations governing professional practice fields relevant to teaching and learning at SNP; and developing, delivering, and/or coordinating instructional professional development opportunities and collaborative training that (a) ensures compliance, meeting or exceeding regulatory standards and (b) addresses staff interests, performance metrics, and professional excellence goals;
Leadership & General Administration
Contributing to and collaborating on organization wide initiatives in support of SNP strategic goals and objectives;
Working cooperatively with all departments, SNP Academic and Senior Leadership, and the Governance Board, providing regular reporting on activities and outcomes related to SNP Centre Teaching & Learning;
Drafting and submitting ad-hoc briefs and reports, as requested by the VPA;
Supervising the daily operations of the staff, including ongoing assessment of staffing needs, conducting annual Performance Reviews, providing ongoing coaching, etc.;
Leading the contract staff hiring process, in coordination with Human Resources;
Participating in the planning and coordination of professional development for Unit staff, including potential collaboration with other Units for shared learning opportunities;
Coordinating courses, workshops, seminars, brown bag lunches, etc. on topics pertaining to education leadership, learner assessment, ed. tech., and other relevant topics;
Providing orientation and training for new and existing instructional staff, to ensure familiarity with teaching policies, procedures, and support services;
Developing, documenting, securing review and approval of, and maintaining policies and processes for the CTL;
Implementing a system for evaluating effectiveness of programs, workshops, and other activities of the CTL;
Developing and maintaining a resource library of best practices in teaching, learning, education leadership, curriculum development, and learner assessment; and
Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Curriculum Design, Instructional Technology, Online Education, Higher Education Leadership, or a related field;
Minimum two years’ experience in an education leadership role, with an emphasis on the development of academic programs or academic support programs;
A record of achievement in teaching, including online and/or hybrid and/or HyFlex delivery, and/or in designing curriculum for these delivery modalities; and
Experience working in Indigenous settings or Indigenous organizations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of national and international trends in CTLs, and the role of teaching and learning centres in promoting academic excellence in higher education; along with an understanding of the scholarship of teaching and learning and current/emerging trends in post-secondary instruction;
Firm grasp of higher education in Ontario and an understanding of the contexts driving relevant provincial policies and compliance requirements, with particular emphasis on the Indigenous Institutes sector;
Demonstrated grasp of Indigenous pedagogies;
Ability to speak an Ogwehoweh language at an intermediate or advanced level is considered an asset;
Familiarity with teacher training, adult education, and professional development needs assessment;
Technological proficiency in an educational setting, including the implementation of ed. tech.;
Understanding of accessibility topics in an academic setting, including individual accommodations, creation and remediation of digital content, and resources to develop and support accessibility;
Familiarity with instructional design best practices;
Demonstrated competencies in strategic thinking, coordination, analysis, policy development, and change management;
A general and current knowledge of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written expression (i.e., faultless spelling and grammar, and professional style);
Strong project management acumen, including budgeting skills and the ability to anticipate long-term financial needs and requirements for program or project delivery; and acumen in all of planning, coordinating, directing, monitoring and evaluating projects;
Ability to work under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines, to meet demanding deadlines;
Demonstrated familiarity with standard desktop computing programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database applications, on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system;
Capacity to work both independently and in a team setting, demonstrating Hodinǫshǫ:nih values of Ga`nigohi:yo: and
