PROGRAM: Step-Up
POSITION: Tutor – Temporary Fulltime (8 weeks x 35 hours week – July 4 – August 26, 2022)
PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Step-Up helps elementary school children maintain and strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills over the summer. Through small group or one-on-one tutoring, students work on basic skills in a casual summer environment. A second priority of Step-Up is to offer meaningful work experience in the education field to students considering teaching as a career.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Step-up Program works with school aged children/youth whose parents have registered them in the Step-Up program. The tutor is responsible for planning and executing lessons which work towards achieving the student’s goals.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: Step-Up Program Coordinator

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Activity Facilitation:
Creating lesson plans based on the students goals, the evaluation of the previous work and incorporating special education methods and practice.
Meet with their assigned students and spend a scheduled amount of time working on the subjects designated in the learning plan.
Reporting:
Actively participate in performance and program evaluations.
Document the progress of the student’s lessons and achievements and prepare progress reports and a final report to the parent at the end of the student’s sessions.
Completes all paperwork requirements regarding employment, wages, etc. as requested.
Contact the supervisor when they are going to be absent.
Other Related Duties:
Participates in the “in service training”.
Participates in staff meetings, meetings with teachers and/or parents
Makes sure the work location is kept tidy and clean
Ensures that all program resources are sorted and returned to correct locations.
Set up and take down the tutoring facility.
Performs other related duties, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with children and teaching or tutoring preferred. Positions are full time through the summer and suitable for senior high school or university students. Tutors must be available weekdays through July and August.
In order to qualify for these positions, students must meet the following criteria:
Be registered full time during the preceding academic year and intending to return to school full time in the upcoming year
Be between the ages of 15 and 30 years
Completed Grade 11
Education
Related post-secondary training and a minimum of one year experience in a similar position or a combination of relevant training and experience. Related training could include:
Social Service Worker Diploma
Human Service Worker Diploma
Community Support Worker Diploma
Literacy training
Skills and Abilities
Self directed and works well independently and as part of a team.
Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Motivated, well organized and detail orientated person with the ability to prioritize.
Intermediate Level 2 technical skills required
Demonstrated ability to interact positively with SCSA board, staff, clients and the public in person and over the telephone.
Working Conditions
Regularly scheduled hours of work between Monday and Friday
Office environment with routine office procedures
