Position Description
The Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre (ONHC) is a proud program of the Somerset West Community Health Centre that provide healthcare, offers timely, coordinated and culturally appropriate health and social services to newcomers. Our approach to care is through a health equity lens with a focus on addressing the social determinants of health to improve the lives and wellbeing of our clients.
SWCHC is looking for an experienced Medical Office Assistant to work in our complex and busy medical clinic, serving a diverse multicultural and socio-economic clientele. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, scheduling appointments, answering phones, medical documentation management, processing mail, scanning, and faxing.
Position Requirements
Post-secondary training for medical office assistant
3-5 years’ experience in a clinical setting
Key Competencies:
Minimum 2 years’ experience in a community-based setting
Knowledge of the Canadian heath care system & social determinants of health
Basic health assessment and interventions, as appropriate
Sensitivity to and passion about multicultural issues
Awareness related to cultural competence
Knowledge of related community resources
Ability to liaise with external parties and to advocate for clients
Knowledge of PSS electronic medical record an asset
Linguistic Profile:
Fluency in English, written and spoken mandatory
Fluency in French is highly desirable
Other languages (Arabic/ Dari/ Farsi/ Pashto an asset
Personal Suitability:
Successful criminal reference check
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work effectively in a busy inter-professional environment
Must be able to work on multiple tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines
Proficient in using computers, various software applications and electronic medical record systems
Commitment to the principles of health equity, inclusion, and anti-racism/anti-oppression
Organizational Responsibilities

Participates in the development of policies and procedures by providing feedback in the Centre’s policy development process
Participates in team and individual professional development opportunities
Contributes to the operationalizing the organization’s anti-racism and anti-oppression policy
