Southeast Resource Development Council Corporation Looking for Tribal Health Educator at Winnipeg, MB Full Time

Southeast Resource Development Council Corporation (SERDC) Health Services is seeking a motivated, experienced, and energetic individual for our organization to fill the role of Tribal Health Educator – Full Time Indefinite Term.

SERDC Health is accredited by the Canadian Accreditation Council to provide exceptional 2nd level services to eight or more First Nation Communities in Manitoba. We are community focused, community driven, and seeking enthused individuals to make a difference in First Nations Health.

The successful candidate will have a strong and proven ability to; coordinate, provide support/prevention strategies and services in the areas of Harm Reduction, Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI’s) in SERDC First Nation Communities. This position will primarily be responsible for coordinating activities for SERDC First Nation communities as well as non-affiliated Indigenous communities in the respective region.

Reporting directly to the Tribal Nursing Officer this role requires an individual who, believes in and practices the principles of harm reduction, can demonstrate strong community engagement skills, and work independently within a work plan to meet expected deliverables.

Position Responsibilities:

• Engage and collaborate with internal and external partners (e.g., NNADAP, Manitoba Harm Reduction Network, RHA’s, etc.).

• Maintain a strong knowledge of harm reduction, safer sex, syringe services, and overdose prevention strategies.

• Complete readiness assessments for all SERDC affiliated communities to support their planning and vision towards a healthy nation.

• Conduct/facilitate health promotion and capacity building initiatives in communities.

• Facilitate/organize harm reduction strategies including needle/syringe exchange in adherence with an identified exchange policy and procedure, safer sex – condom distribution, overdose prevention, etc.

• Provide written and verbal harm reduction/STBBI’s information on safer strategies.

• Facilitate and Support AIA/MTU on site addictions needs and services coordination with interdisciplinary team. This will include pharmacy support, traditional medicine, harm reduction strategies and individual client focused managed alcohol programing.

• Develop effective, trusting relationships with clients and community leadership.

• Identify clients in need and aid in accessing support services and access to local testing and treatment initiatives. Make appropriate referrals to other agencies/identify if interventions are required.

• Conduct follow-up calls to clients and record information gathered for documentation purposes.

• Collaborate with community agencies and service providers and assist in local advocacy efforts.

• Conduct data collection within the program and community, analyzing the data, compiling, and submitting required summary reports and planning program delivery according to the goals and objectives of the program.

• Keep current on new initiatives and research in related health areas and ensure staff are aware of new treatment methods as required.

• Maintain a current, thorough knowledge of community resources and utilize these to provide comprehensive, supportive services to clients and support to staff.

• Oversee all aspects of program development and delivery, including policy and quality improvement strategies.

• Work collaboratively with SERDC Health Services to design and develop public health education materials/planning guides and conduct the training for on-site staff and in community support workers to implement the training as needed (train the trainer method)

• Plan, budget, develop, implement, and evaluate projects/strategies relating to the management of health issues.

• Prepare reports for funder(s) and liaison with referring sources when required.

• Provide on-going, one-on-one guidance and support to clients and other health staff.

• Participate in internal/external meetings as required and other educator/networking and professional development opportunities as identified by Immediate Supervisor.

• Adhere to all SERDC policies.

• During an emergency epidemic/pandemic situation, job duties will be reviewed and reassigned accordingly.

• All other related duties assigned by your supervisor and the Leadership of SERDC.

Qualifications:

• Valid current CPR/First Aid Certification.
• Proven understanding of First Nations health care.
• Culturally sensitive and knowledgeable of Indigenous/SERDC communities/cultures and traditions.
• Knowledge of the issues and challenges in First Nations Health Management, and of the structure and operations of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) of Health Canada and other Federal/Provincial departments.
• Self-directed, motivated, and flexible with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of and experience working from a harm reduction model of care in all areas of public health, including but not limited to HIV/STBBI, and Hepatitis C.
• Excellent understanding and application of a computer/laptop including usage of MS Office programs.
• Strong time management and ability to multi-task.
• Excellent communication skills – interpersonal, written, verbal.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain professional relations and managerial skills.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
• Capability to lift at least 50lbs and travel – by all forms of transportation, to remote and northern First Nation communities in MB.
• Current and valid MB Driver’s License with accessibility to a reliable insured vehicle.

Education & Experience:

• Post-secondary education in a related field or a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the field of community health and/or social service.
• Combination of education & experience (**significant experience may be substituted for education) as determined by SERDC.
• Five or more years’ experience working with youth and individuals of all ages with drug addictions or who are at risk of developing an addiction.
