Position Overview
The Animal Care Worker (ACW) Team is the group of non-technical staff who are responsible for facility and equipment maintenance and sanitation. Under indirect supervision and in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOP’s), the Animal Care Worker I performs facility maintenance and cage sanitation for a variety of research animal species.
The position is ideal for a person with a high school diploma with an interest in animal care and or research. The position requires the incumbent to have the ability to pay attention to detail, follow written standard operating procedures and complete tasks with indirect supervision. Position requires considerable physical exertion (lifting up to 50 lbs, and pushing, pulling large objects) as well as walking or standing through the shift. The position may be required to work assigned weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
The key responsibility of all staff of the R.O.Burrell Lab is the health and humane care of all animals in the facility while providing quality support to research staff and their projects. This position specifically applies to these goals as they relate to high standards of sanitization and cleanliness of the animal caging and support areas of the animal facility.
The position reports directly to the Coordinator, R.O. Burrell Lab with daily direction given by either the Coordinator or Senior Lab Animal Technician.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform duties of husbandry as they pertain to cage sanitation and facility maintenance for a variety of animal species in accordance with Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) standards.
Not required to have direct contact with any animal.
Follow standard operating procedures.
Transport clean and dirty equipment within the facility.
Clean, sanitize and organize support areas of the facility.
Dump all animal cage bedding into garbage. Prepare animal housing equipment and accessories for cage washing. Ensure maximum efficiency of cage washed loads per day.
Operate and maintain a variety of equipment including animal housing equipment, cage washer, pressure washer, automatic watering system, automatic floor scrubber, bedding dump station and vacuums.
Maintain high level of personal hygiene due to working in dirty environment.
Report all adverse events (abnormalities) that occur in the facility that have the potential to affect animal welfare or research results.
Participate in improvement of work group processes and performance which includes participation at Staff and Team Meetings.
Assist other Animal Care Workers as required.
Follow direction given by Supervisor.
Adhere to all safety and health policies, regulations and safe work practices.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
Grade 10 Education.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
WHMIS Certification.
Qualifications and Skills
Ability to speak and read English.
Requires ability to understand and follow written and spoken instructions.
Ability to work without direct supervision.
Hard working, enthusiastic with a positive attitude. The incumbent must be committed to maintaining high standards of animal health and welfare.
Physical Requirements
Ability to tolerate working in unpleasant elements such as wet environment, warm temperatures, dust, and odors.
Ability to walk or stand throughout shift.
Ability to lift, push or pull heavy equipment.
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
