Stantec’s Sustainability Building Performance (S BP) team is a nationally integrated community of practice of collaborative design and consulting professionals. We provide professional consulting in support of innovative, high-performance projects, including building performance simulation, integrated design and green building facilitation, and design guidance for new buildings and retrofit projects.
We work with a diverse group of clients and project types in health care, education, institutional, airport, commercial, and community development sectors in support of projects seeking high performance outcomes and/or certification. These include net-zero energy, carbon neutral, Passive House, LEED, WELL and Living Building Challenge projects.
Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking ten energy modeling professionals to join our growing Sustainability Building Performance (S BP) practice in Canada. Positions are available in our major offices including Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Mississauga, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.
The qualified candidate will have considerable background in energy-efficient system design and simulation, rating systems, renewable energy feasibility studies, and energy management & incentive programs. A sound knowledge of HVAC and lighting systems, building control systems, energy conservation measures, greenhouse gas emission, and building energy simulation programs is expected. Exceptional communication skills, the ability to provide excellent client service and a commitment to sustainable design are essential for this position.
Your Key Responsibilities
Provide building performance modeling, analysis and reporting to assess energy and thermal performance of new and existing commercial, institutional, and residential buildings.
Work with clients and design teams as part of an integrated design approach to identify design strategies aimed at improving energy performance, reducing carbon emissions, and optimizing indoor air quality and thermal comfort; provide ongoing analysis through design and construction.
Conduct building Energy & Water Benchmarking analysis. Validate utility consumption profiles using procedures such as regression analysis and weather normalization.
Complete technical analysis and feasibility studies for renewable energy systems and design concepts.
Provide technical support for projects through services including energy modelling, documentation for code compliance and 3rd party certification, sustainable design strategies, report writing and presentations.
Assist with energy related mechanical engineering, including design, analysis and reporting in support of efficient and sustainable energy related projects.
Participate in Research & Development projects to identify opportunities to improve buildings performance.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Experience
Experience in a consulting engineering or building construction environment with a specialization in building mechanical systems, building envelopes, and/or building energy efficiency is required.
3 to 5 years’ experience in consulting engineering and energy modeling using eQUEST, IES Virtual Environment, TRNSYS, EnergyPlus or other energy simulation tools.
Experience integrating BIM tools such as Revit with simulation tools such as IES.
Experience with thermal comfort analysis, life-cycle cost analysis, and existing building auditing
Experience with CFD modeling for natural and displacement ventilation would be an asset.
Good knowledge of relevant standards including ASHRAE 90.1, NECB, LEED etc.
An understanding of energy retrofit methods and government energy efficiency incentive programs.
Experience in alternative energy including any of the following technologies: solar thermal, solar PV, wind, geo-exchange, cogeneration, district energy, biomass, and ocean energy.
Strong professional verbal and written communication skills -ability to communicate in a timely manner appropriate with clients and building design team members.
Computer proficiency, especially with Microsoft Office.
Education and Credentials
A mechanical engineering degree or equivalent with 3 to 5 years of energy modeling experience is required.
Graduates from other numerate disciplines with relevant experience and a good understanding of building engineering systems may be considered.
Registered (or eligible for registration) as a P. Eng., E.I.T. or C.E.T. with a Canadian Professional Association or Certifying Body.
