Role Summary:

• Interact with the other teams in AOSQE to build out new IT innovations jointly, solving the most complex IT problems for the organization.
• Create a bridge between development and operations by applying a software engineering mindset to system administration topics. This role will split its time between operations/on-call duties and developing systems and software that help increase application reliability and performance.
• Own the responsibility to apply a software development mindset to solution for availability, latency, performance, efficiency, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning.
• Work closely with product developers to ensure that the designed solution responds to non-functional requirements such as availability, observability, performance, reliability, security and maintainability.
• Work with Release Management to ensure that the software delivery pipeline is as efficient as possible

What will you do?

• Provide senior technical leadership and integrated guidance across business, product and technology teams/partners to improve the design and operation of systems, making them scalable, reliable and efficient while ensuring performance and high availability of products/services.
• Consider resiliency and stability of the production systems as the primary focus however embraces new features and operational improvements through the application of software engineering practices to operations.
• Improve and maintain site availability, scalability, and service and system performance. Investigates system errors and problems, bottleneck analysis of the system at scale and reducing toil where possible.
• Set up monitoring systems and application metrics as well as supervises them for prediction & detection of failures. This includes automated scripting to handle pre-established handling procedures as well as anomaly detection and establishment of new automated handling procedures as appropriate.
• Lead and participate in the development of principles, standards, guidelines, tools and processes on the opportunities/standards related to reliability enablers.
• Assist in Technology Governance working closely with Architects within AOSQE by assessing the appropriate evolution of technology while guiding the teams on deployment.
• Establish and continuously refine Reliability Metrics (SLO, SLI, Error Budget) for supported applications

What you need to succeed:

• 5+ years of IT related experience, with particular emphasis on Application and Infrastructure operations.
• 2+ years of relevant work experience in server administration and/or cloud solution administration in an enterprise environment.
• 2+ years in a DevOps / Site Reliability Engineering role demonstrating a mix of Software Engineering, System Administration and/or Enterprise Operations skills.
• Ability to proactively identify potential trouble spots, security/control issues, design shortcomings and create mitigation strategies
• Experience with DevOps environments and the use of automation to deliver business value is useful.
• Ability to debug, code optimization, and ability to automate routine task
• Ability to define Reliability Metrics (SLO, SLI, Error Budget), Observability metrics (Monitoring, Logging-Tracing solutions), Ops processes (Incident, Problem Management) and streamline release management

Preferred Skills:

• Ability to work autonomously on high profile, complex and/or high-risk technology initiatives with significant impact to the organization.
• Authoritative expert on site reliability issues within the organization.
• Systematic problem-solving approach, excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and a sense of ownership and drive.
• Experience designing and implementing tasks in continuous integration systems (Jenkins, Bitbucket, Ansible, etc)
• Understanding of how software is written and deployed via a CI/CD pipeline
• Solid understanding of security fundamentals in order to help make recommendations that mitigate risk of implementing reliable and resilient solutions
• Know how incident response roles are structured and understand incident response concepts.

  This role requires Canadian Enhanced Reliability Security clearance [a minimum of 5 years of consecutive residency in Canada].

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
