Job Description:
As the Senior Payroll Specialist, you will be responsible to ensure our payroll and accounting processes are handled effectively and efficiently. You are responsible for ensuring that best practices are followed for Payroll Accounting processing coordinated by internal Payroll staff through external providers and payment to all US based employees.
What will you do?
Processes bi-weekly payrolls for full time and part time US employees.
Manages complicated pay exceptions, bonus and incentive payments, retroactive payments, error resolution, overpayments, voids and complex problem solving for payroll, time management and financial reporting.
Generates various reports bi-weekly/monthly/quarterly e.g. for Pension, Benefits, Finance and Ad-hoc for Business units.
Processes State Disability Insurance taxable benefits for employees.
Assists in preparing the Worker’s Compensation Annual renewal and Sentry reporting.
Assists in reviewing quarterly Tax filling and remitting the quarterly Worker’s Comp for various US agencies.
Sets-up new US tax Jurisdictions in ADP Smart Compliance system.
Works with Finance and Banking to reconcile the unclaimed cheques.
Maintains a high degree of confidentiality relative to personal data, Compensation data and employee benefits information.
Ensures integrity, consistency, and reliability with regards to auditing the information entered HRIS system.
Research issues and promptly resolves internal and external inquiries.
Supports internal and external audit requirements.
Assists Payroll Manager with year-end balancing and reporting.
Stays current, complies with and provides interpretations on various rules, regulations, and laws.
Resolves payroll discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.
Uses various software programs to input, maintain, research and retrieve information necessary for payroll, along with managing the MasterFile spreadsheets.
Performs and assists with existing configurations, quality checks and with new payroll system configuration.
Provides input to improve Payroll processes and apply Best Practices.
Takes ownership and coordinates updates to process documentation. Identify and document gaps in training and processes; make recommendations for improvements.
Performs other related duties or projects as assigned.
What do you need to succeed?
Minimum 4 years’ experience processing high-volume payroll.
Payroll Certification is an asset.
Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance diploma/degree required.
Experience with multi-state tax jurisdictions required.
Intermediate Excel with knowledge of vlookups and pivot table.
Experience with ADP Global View; Smart Compliance, Tableau, SAP is an asset.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and take required action.
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work minimum supervision.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
