About Tarion

Since 1976, Tarion has provided new home warranty protection to more than 2 million Ontario homes. We serve new home buyers and new homeowners by ensuring that one of their life’s biggest investments is protected. Almost every new home in the province is covered by a new home warranty. This warranty protection is provided by Ontario’s builders and lasts up to seven years. It is backstopped by Tarion. More than 375,000 homes are currently enrolled in the warranty program. Every year about 55,000 new homes are enrolled.

We investigate homeowner warranty claims; resolve warranty disputes between homeowners and builders; and provide deposit and delayed closing protection for new home buyers. We also manage the Guarantee Fund, an important financial reserve designed to help shield Ontario consumers from possible catastrophic building events. All of this enhances fairness and confidence in Ontario’s new home building industry.

About the Role

The Tarion Law department has three broad functions: operational, support and policy development. A key operational component of the administration of the Ontario New Home Warranties and Protection Plan is dispute resolution, which Law addresses in courts, arbitrations and tribunals. Law supports other Tarion departments, the CEO and the Board of Directors by providing sound legal advice and recommendations regarding Tarion’s operations and special projects. Law is also involved in the development of Tarion’s policies and strategic initiatives. This position provides legal administrative and clerical support to lawyers in Tarion’s Law Department.

Areas of Responsibility:

• Clerical Support for lawyers – includes document management, scheduling, opening and closing files, and tracking file status and deadlines.
• Administrative support for lawyers – includes preparing court, Licence Appeal Tribunal, and Builder Arbitration Forum materials.

Qualifications:

• College diploma (administrative, legal assistant, law clerk, or paralegal)
• At least 1 – 2 years’ experience providing administrative support in a civil litigation environment
• Good working knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure
• Excellent computer skills and superior knowledge of all MS Office programs
• Excellent planning, organization, and interpersonal skills
• Proactive and process-oriented working style, with attention to detail
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight or direction
• Ability to multi-task, meet pressing deadlines and anticipate lawyer’s needs
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
