Background:

The Firelight Group is a dynamic, socially responsible, indigenous-owned business providing community-based research and consulting services across Canada for the last decade. We have a growing team of over 80 professionals, and office space in Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto, as well as our head office in West Vancouver. The successful candidate will work alongside other professionals in a fast-paced, exciting, and challenging work environment. Our organization is spread country wide and consisting mainly of consultants in a remote environment, requiring an HR professional needing minimal direction and supervision.

The HR Generalist position will provide strong support to our HR team. Their role will be a crucial coordinating role that supports the Senior HR Generalist as well as providing support and guidance to Jr and Intern staff within the department. The role will have a heavy focus on talent management and the support of policy development. In addition to supporting everyday responsibilities, the successful candidate will also be contributing to the delivery of HR programs and practices. Projects will be established based on skills, experience, and specific business needs.

Job Duties

  • Assist the development and execution of personnel procedures and policies, providing guidance and interpretation for business operations;
  • Participate in development of HR objectives and systems, including metrics, queries, and standard reports for ongoing company requirements;
  • Assist in administering benefits, compensation, and employee performance programs;
  • Contribute to the development of new procedures and policies to continually improve efficiency of the HR department and organization, and to improve employee experiences;
  • Ensure legal compliance of HR provincial and federal regulations and all applicable employment laws, and update policies and/or procedures as required;
  • Prepare paperwork, schedule, and facilitate a smooth new hire onboarding process, coordinating with cross-functional departments to deliver an exceptional first-day experience;
  • Handle all administrative tasks for onboarding, new hire orientation, and exit interviews, including entering data into HR information systems and auditing for accuracy and compliance; and
  • Provide support on various HR projects as needed.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of the Indigenous culture and relations is mandatory.
  • Sound knowledge of remote work and consultant environments.
  • Possession of the discipline and tact for difficult conversations.
  • Ability and experience developing HR policy and implementing new procedures with minimum mentorship and guidance.
  • Sound knowledge of Human Resources functionalty in all areas, particularly in Policy Development, People Management and Recruitment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal support and supervision.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, ethics, and knowledge of Indigenous culture(s).
  • Resourceful, problem-solving aptitude and thorough knowledge of HR procedures and policies.
  • Full understanding of employment standards/legislations in all provinces/territories of Canada.
  • Proficiency navigating iOS.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, HRIS systems, and comfort learning new technical systems as needed.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or Permenant Resident, residing in Canada and available to work without sponsorship.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in Human Resources or a similar capacity, but will consider a Diploma in Human Resources plus direct HR experience.
  • CPHR or working towards certification preferred.
  • 3-5 years of consecutive HR experience working within Indigenous communities/organizations preferred.
