Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Supply Chain, the Logistics and Transportation Director is responsible for managing the entire logistics network. The successful candidate is an empathetic leader who knows how to guide, coach, support, and mentor team members towards the achievement of objectives.

The main responsibilities are to plan, organize, direct, coordinate and evaluate distribution operations with respect to the coordination of inbound transportation to distribution centers, warehousing, in-transit inventory control and the transportation of goods across Canada. The incumbent must simultaneously optimize time and cost while maintaining the targeted level of service. Involvement in various projects including expansions and acquisitions is also expected.

In summary, this role is primarily focused on team management, budget management, operation improvement, complex problem solving, solution implementation while maintaining good relationships with internal and external parties and customers. Out of province travel is estimated at approximately 10% of the time in Canada.

Principal tasks:Management of transportation and logistics operations:

• Responsible for ensuring that internal and external operations remain safe at all times;
• Plan, organize, direct and control transportation, external warehousing and handling operations;
• Ensure efficient replenishment of branches according to established service levels;
• Assign and manage carriers according to transportation needs in the various regions;
• Negotiate services and preferential rates with carriers and logistics service providers;
• Ensure the proper management of the fleet of 5 vehicles in the Eastern region;

Project management and implementation of new solutions and facilities:

• Coordinate the design and optimization of distribution centers -2 New distribution centers in Canada;
• Coordinate new distribution center deployment activities with vendors;
• Participate in IT implementation projects (e.g. ERP, WMS, TMS, LMS)
• Manage and follow up on various special projects for the supply chain team

Budget and strategy management:

• Prepare and monitor the department’s annual budget as well as various special projects or decisions to be made;
• Develop partnerships with strategic external service providers (3PL, Carrier)
• Constantly challenge the status quo by identifying all opportunities;
• Maintain and continually update logistics and transportation strategies;

Continuously optimize and improve processes:

• Review and communicate processes to stakeholders while identifying opportunities for improvement;
• Define policies and processes for safety and handling of dangerous goods;
• Deploy and monitor transportation policy across Canada and service levels;
• Collaborate to develop and communicate operational excellence within the team;

Business intelligence and analysis:

• Monitor service performance, write analysis and plan schedule and policy changes;
• Define performance goals, track rate setting for outbound and/or inbound transportation services;
• Participate and collaborate in integrated S&OP business planning with stakeholders;
• Participate in the implementation and monitoring of global network performance indicators;
• Contribute to the provision of business analysis to support decisions;

Human Resources Management:

• Participate in the recruitment, development and support of external talent;
• Support and coach work teams including transportation, logistics analysis and projects;
• Ensure full collaboration between teams and support departments (i.e. HR, IT, legal, finance)
• Ensure a pleasant and motivating work environment, including for teleworkers;
• Ensure good talent management by maintaining development and knowledge transfer plans
• Clearly communicate objectives through town halls and team events
• Ensure an environment where leaders and members demonstrate diplomacy, courtesy and respect;

Requirements:

• 12-15 years of experience in distribution operations and transportation management with personnel management OR a bachelor’s degree in business administration (GOP) or engineering industrial with significant relevant experience;
• Bilingualism is essential, good oral and written communication in French and English;
• Knowledge of database management and massive data analysis;
• Good knowledge of ERP, WMS and TMS systems;
• Experience with ERP, Bolt on, SaaS or supply management modules; (Infor is an asset)
• Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and Excel application;
• Canadian Freight Laws, Fleet Operator and/or Customs regulations;
• Leadership skills – Ability to guide, support and coach teams to achieve objectives;
• Excellent interpersonal and empathic skills to motivate and coach team members;
• Positive, receptive attitude that encourages open communication and promotes productive teamwork;
• Excellent data analysis skills to support a fact-based recommendation
• Ability to make strategic, sometimes complex, critical and risky decisions for the company;
• Strength in developing and maintaining business partnerships with service providers – including mediation
• Act as a “coach-leader” and ambassador of change to his/her team
