The Opportunity
Adhering to the generally accepted accounting principles, the Senior Accountant performs professional complex accounting work. The Senior Accountant prepares a variety of monthly and quarterly financial reports and budget data, is responsible for maintaining schedules and working files and completes monthly journal entries and financial analysis related to contracts and revenue.
The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting day-to-day accounting functions including accounts receivable, banking and general accounting transactions. This includes account reconciliations and reporting and posting information to accounting journals, spreadsheets and accounting software. This position is located onsite in the Victoria, BC corporate office.
Responsibilities
Revenue
- Prepare adjusting, reversing and accrual journal entries on a monthly basis for all revenue, un-billed and unearned amounts, while ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures and accurate recording to general ledger accounts.
- Assist management with financial analysis related to billings and revenue.
General Accounting & Treasury
- Review various cash management tasks including monitoring bank balances, generating bank transfers, posting bank transactions, and reviewing weekly and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Review month-end account reconciliations and inter-company reconciliations, which includes any outstanding inter-company loans. Review and post monthly recurring entries and other journal entries.
- Participate in year-end audit process; provide information for external auditors, and prepare reports.
- Review government remittances including GST, HST, PST, and US Sales Taxes ensuring adherence to internal policies and tax legislation.
- Reconcile capital asset accounts and prepare continuity schedule.
- Preparing and balancing monthly financial statements.
- Conduct monthly variance analysis between actual results and forecasted balances.
Accounts Receivable/Administration
- Supervise completion of accounts receivable function, which includes processing after the fact invoices and credit memos, depositing cheques, and updating overdue accounts when paid.
- Follow up on any large overdue customer payments.
Other
- Supervise and mentor junior accountants.
- Participate in the analysis of company operations to pinpoint opportunities for improvement.
- Provide ad-hoc reports and analysis on a timely basis to senior management as required.
- Budgeting; assist in the development of the quarterly budget forecast.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Completion of a university degree in accounting or completion of at least the 3rd level of a recognized professional accounting designation.
- Three or more years experience in a full cycle accounting role.
- Experience with accounting software (Epicor preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue % completion accounting, A/R and general ledger account structure.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, Word, and Outlook, and advanced Excel skills.
- Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures.
- Ability to research GAAP and tax laws.
- Ability to interpret, explain, report on and provide advice on a variety of accounting and budgetary issues, including department rules and regulations.
- Good interpersonal, communication and time management skills, ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for all staff.
